On January 21, 1847, a group of Poughkeepsie women called the Female Guardian Society met to form the Poughkeepsie Orphan House and Home of the Friendless to care for the poor, abandoned and neglected in their communities, most especially the children.
By November 1854, the Board of Managers had raised $4,500.
The Poughkeepsie Orphan House and Home for the Friendless was dedicated on February 23, 1857.
An 1876 law stated that judges could no longer commit any child over age 3 or under age 16 to a county poorhouse.
