Childrens Music Academy company history timeline

1985

It all began in 1985, when composer Kenneth K. Guilmartin found himself teaching music at his daughter's school in Montclair, New Jersey.

1987

What started in 1987 as a tiny program in Princeton, New Jersey, has now expanded all over the world and changed the lives of millions of children—and the grownups who love them.

Shortly after that, they began to design the Music Together materials and classroom techniques that were first offered to the public in the fall of 1987—and have served as the foundation for the evolution of the curriculum ever since.

2003

In August 2003, the academy took a large step toward that goal when it opened a two-week, all-day summer program titled State Street Klassical Kids.

2004

In Fall 2004 the Academy launched the Sundays on State Street concert series at St Lawrence Chapel.

2005

A year later, in Fall 2005, the SSA took the next step by offering its first opportunities for students: piano lessons and a children’s choir.

2006

The State Street Academy of Music officially opened its doors to students in the spring of 2006, but the process started three years earlier.

2015

Presented with the Certificate of Excellence from the National Arts & Humanities Youth Program Award in June 2015
