Christian Brothers University history

Christian Brothers awarded the first post-secondary degree in the city in 1875.

First bachelor degrees offered.1877.

The city's largest university, The University of Memphis, was not founded until 1912.

Functioning as a combined elementary school, high school (now Christian Brothers High School), and college, Christian Brothers College granted high school diplomas as well as Bachelor's and Master's Degrees until 1915, when the college division was suspended.

In 1939, a joint public fundraising drive with St Agnes Academy was initiated with a goal of the then-enormous sum of $250,000.

During his presidency, the Brothers purchased the 612 Adams Street building, which housed the college until 1940 when the college moved to its present location at Central Avenue and East Parkway South.

The school re-opened a junior college department and granted Associate of Arts degrees in 1942.

Due to World War II, collegiate courses suspended until 1946.

Battersby Hall was constructed soon afterward. It reopened in 1947 with 70 students enrolled, half of them war veterans attending under the new G.I. Bill of Rights.

Higher education In 1953, the decision was made to expand the community college into a four-year institution to better serve the needs of the community.

The four-year curriculum began with degrees in Business Administration and Electrical Engineering, with the first graduates in recent times receiving their degrees in 1955.

The original bell tower, erected in 1958, was a project of the CBC Mothers’ Club.

In September 1961, a 27-acre plot of land on Walnut Grove Road was purchased.

Ernest Donohue transferred from LeMoyne-Owen College to CBC, making it the first integrated private college in Memphis.1963.

Christian Brothers High School did not open its separate doors until 1965, but in the meantime, it had made a different sort of history.

When another Catholic college in Memphis (the all-female Siena College) closed, Christian Brothers University became coeducational in 1970.

Programs at the graduate level were reinstated in 1987 with the Master's program in Telecommunication and Information Systems.

At foundation the educational institution was named Christian Brothers College which was changed to Christian Brothers University when the school became a university in June 1990.

Accessed October 1, 2007.] De la Salle began a system of Christian schools in which teachers assist parents in the educational, ethical, and religious formation of their children.

The university currently has a lay interim president following the fatal car accident of former president Brother Vincent Malham in 2008.

In 2014, CBU was awarded the NCAA Academic Excellence Award in recognition of its 90% Academic Success Rate.

Rosa Deal School of Arts construction completed on the former site of Kenrick Hall.2017.
