City of Amesbury company history timeline
At the time of the first census in 1801 Amesbury had a population of only 721.
In 1837 a workhouse was built in Amesbury.
The first 5 acres was purchased by William Carruthers, Joseph Morrill and Joshua R. Cheswell from Samuel Lamprey on May 20, 1852.
The cannon was built and cast by Watervliet Arsenal in NY in 1852.
The second purchase was made from Jabez E Collins on April 26, 1853.
The cannon is designated Watervliet Arsenal No 1 D.A.H 1892 and was probably used in the Spanish American War.
In 1936 the Plaza cinema was built in Amesbury.
Historic New England acquired the Rocky Hill Meeting House in 1941 and has preserved it as one of the best examples of town meeting houses in New England.
More were built after 1945.
Mount Prospect was a privately-owned cemetery until 1957 when the Town of Amesbury started the process to take over this and Old Corner due to deteriorating conditions.
At the March 17, 1958 Annual Meeting, Articles 26 and 27 were approved, stating that the Town would take over the cemetery associations.
A by-pass was built in 1970.
A new library was built in 1973.
A Sports Hall was opened in Amesbury in 1974.
