    Job DescriptionBirmingham Police Department Patrol Officer The function of the Police officer assigned to a uniformed patrol shift is to provide protection of life, property, and human rights. This is accomplished by providing law enforcement services to those who live, work, and shop within the City of Birmingham. Duties and Responsibilities: Promote the safety and security within the community. Work diligently toward the achievement of the Department's mission, vision, and values. Enforce laws and ordinances. Protect the constitutional rights of the public. Adhere to and comply with operating procedures (general orders, personnel rules, special orders, administrative memorandums, and other policies). Ensure subordinates also adhere to this. Utilize a service performance style that promotes high morale, exemplary performance, and promotes harmonious relationships. Responsible for the efficient and professional operation of police radio systems. Ensure departmental equipment is always in functional, operating condition and that defective equipment is reported or repaired. Keep supervisors informed of events or occurrences that affect policies, operations, or personnel. Maintain a positive working relationship with other units of the Police Department as well as other applicable municipal departments within the city and/or other governmental/private organizations. Respond to calls for service efficiently and safely. Investigate criminal and civil cases as required and prepare complete, legible, and concise reports on investigated cases. Safe operation of departmental vehicles during non-emergency and emergency situations. Attend scheduled training sessions as required. Attend roll call and inspect and equip the patrol vehicle at the start of each shift. Responsible for the safety and care of all prisoners taken into custody. Maintain departmental uniforms and equipment in good condition. Maintain minimum department performance standards. Participate in community policing projects as assigned by team members/leaders. Perform other job duties as assigned by the shift supervisor. Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: Must have a working knowledge of all department orders, policies and procedures, city ordinances and applicable state and federal laws and statutes. Ability to work with and get along well with fellow officers, supervisors, and other city employees. Must be able to communicate clearly, verbally, and in writing. Understand and carry out verbal and written instructions. Must be proficient in the care and use of department issued firearms and other defensive weapons. Ability to relate to the public under various circumstances including ethnic and social considerations/backgrounds. Must have a working knowledge of the geographical area of Birmingham including street locations, the street numbering system and known landmarks. Should maintain a high level of physical fitness and be able to sit or stand for long periods of time. Ability to work alone for extended times without supervision. Ability and willingness to work in all weather conditions. Minimum Qualifications (At time of application): Possession of an Associate Degree in Police Administration, Law Enforcement, Police Science, or related field of study; or a B.A. or B.S. in any course of study from a recognized college or university. Successful completion of the MCOLES pre-employment written and physical skills test with current valid results. SUMMARY: The Materials Management Specialist receives stores and issues supplies and maintains records in a storeroom; assist in the supervision of a stores' operation; direct the work activities of employees engaged in specialized stores' activities. Examples of Duties ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Receive, store, and disburse stock, equipment and tools. Prepare requisitions and make recommendations for purchases based on operation needs and past consumption from records. Perform and reconcile physical count with inventory records and order requests. Contact vendors to obtain price quotes, secure prices and to place orders. Direct and oversee the work of employees engaged in stores activities. Prepare various store activity reports. Ensure security of supplies, equipment, materials and/or recycled products. Develop methods to assign inventory/stock numbers and locate places for storing materials and supplies. Develop and maintain a variety of records including but not limited to perpetual inventory records, time records of field crews, work, costs, or quantities of supplies furnished for a particular job and other similar activity records. Consult manufacturers and catalogues for materials and supplies specifications. Check incoming material and supplies for quality and quantity against invoices, purchase orders, packing slips, contract order release forms or other documents. Operate automotive vehicles and mechanized materials handling equipment such as forklifts and dollies. Perform shift work, which includes all day, afternoon, night, weekend and holiday assignments. A valid Michigan Driver's License and the ability to drive a motor vehicle on all terrain. Wear personal protective equipment (PPE). Follow security and safety policies and procedures in carrying out work duties. Provide on the job training. RELATED JOB FUNCTIONS: Keep storeroom and/or yards in a clean and orderly condition. Perform related work duties as assigned. REQUIIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (position requirements at entry) * High School Diploma or GED * Two (2) years of experience in handling and issuing of supplies in a warehouse or store operation including maintenance of related clerical records ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS Physical Requirements: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential duties of this job. Employees will also be required to pass a yearly baseline physical and fit test for respirator/Self Contained Breathing Apparatus. Work may be performed in hazardous areas that require respiratory protection and personal protective equipment (PPE), and under slippery and wet conditions. This position may be exposed to excessive noise, moving objects and vehicles. OTHER REQUIREMENTS Valid Michigan Driver's License. Operate forklift or dolly. NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT(S): * Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Michigan Driver's License. * Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Michigan CDL with class B endorsement or higher. * Certification as a Specialty Mechanic in all 6 categories of heavy-duty truck repair as defined by the Michigan Department of State (Categories include Engine Repair-Gasoline, Engine Repair-Diesel, Drive Train, Brakes & Braking Systems, Suspension & Steering Systems, and Electrical Systems.) OR equivalent qualification/certification in a branch of the United States Military Service (copy of DD-214 must be provided as proof of qualification). * Must have at the time of hire or be able to obtain and maintain an Automotive Heating and Air Conditioning certificate approved by EPA * Preferred: Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Master Automotive, Heavy-Duty Truck Technician or Transit Bus certification or four Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certifications, depending on assignment. * Possession of hand tools as defined by the agreement between the City of Flint and Local 1600 AFSCME. * Ability and willingness to continue to pursue additional State of Michigan Specialty Certifications. Failure to maintain the minimum required certifications may result in disciplinary action up to and including discharge. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: * Superior knowledge of the design, operation, and repair of light and heavy-duty gasoline and diesel equipment, hydraulic systems, and accessory power equipment. * Ability to diagnose mechanical defects and ability to determine parts and adjustments necessary to put equipment into proper operating condition. * Ability to meet physical, visual, and mental standards of the job. * Ability and willingness to work in a manner that will not needlessly endanger the safety to oneself, other people, and equipment.
