The war ended, and in 1846 Ruben Marsh got married and moved to what is now known as DeLand.
The fire of 1855 forever changed the face of downtown DeLand along Woodland Blvd.
In 1883 he founded The DeLand Academy and watched it grow with the efforts of his friend John B. Stetson.
In 1886, residents of DeLand were allowed to take 50 cents off their taxes for each oak tree they planted that lived for one year.
The first building was built in 1887 on land that was donated by Henry DeLand.
He continued to work in order to buy back land from ruined farmers and by the time he died in 1908 he had purchased back every piece of land that he had sold to settlers who wished to leave.
In the 1920's, DeLand left the same prosperity as much of the rest of the country.
The opening of the first paved road through the Everglades in 1924 was a turning point for South and Central Florida. — It was Independence Day 1924 in Okeechobee, Florida.
“Here will soon be one of the busiest and most populous towns in Florida,” insisted one October 1925 announcement.
The courthouse was rebuilt in the same spot in 1927 and is considered to be one of the most beautiful in the state of Florida.
The Navy turned the airbase over to the city of DeLand in 1946.
