City of Leander company history timeline

1855

In 1855, the first school opened in a log cabin.

Prior to being Leander, the town was located one mile west and was officially named Bagdad in 1855.

1858

The first post office was opened in 1858.

1860

The United Methodist church was established in 1860.

1870

In May 1870, a two-story native stone structure was built by the newly-formed Masonic Lodge.

By the 1870’s, Bagdad had a hotel, school, several general stores, two blacksmith shops, and several churches.

1871

In 1871, the first school was started in Bagdad by the Masonic Lodge; it was the only free school in the area.

1881

In 1881 the Austin and Northwest Railroad began construction of a new rail line that would connect Austin to Abilene.

1893

In 1893, the first public schools were opened both in Leander and Bagdad.

1899

On June 7, 1899, the Leander High School Association incorporated under Texas law.

1978

On January 21, 1978, the City of Leander was incorporated.

On January 21, 1978 the City of Leander was established and shortly after that, C.D. Hill was named as the first City Marshal.

1982

In 1982, archeologists discovered the remains of an 8,000 – 10,000 year old woman nicknamed the “Leanderthal Lady”. The Tonkawas, Comanches, and Lipan Apaches were the nomadic tribes that lived in the area at the time of the first European settlements.

1990

When incorporated, Leander’s population was just around 300 people, but in the early 1990’s the population had grown to just over 3,300.

2007

In 2007, a new facility was opened on Sonny Drive, where it is located today.

2017

The City of Leander created the Leander Historical Preservation Commission in 2017 to preserve and share our history.
