City of Lewisburg history
City of Lewisburg company history timeline
Originally it constituted the northwestern portion of Virginia, but its inhabitants defied the state’s secession convention in 1861, choosing instead to remain within the union.
In May 1862 Lewisburg was the site of a brief battle during the American Civil War won by Union forces led by Colonel George Crook.
Built in 1902 for the Lewisburg Female Institute, it was named for industrialist Andrew Carnegie who largely funded the project.
In 1978, a 236-acre area in the heart of Lewisburg was designated a National Register Historic District.
Lewisburg’s historic district was created in 1985.
