City of Minnetonka company history timeline

1850

Their Wayzata neighbors, in the 1850' s, were the Keeslings and Harringtons, from Indiana and Canada.

1854

The sawed lumber was sold in St Anthony and St Paul markets until a fire destroyed the mill in 1854.

1857

The first census, the Territorial Census of 1857, lists 41 households.

1869

Thomas Perkins, in 1869, constructed a 3-1/2 story f lour mill and an ad joining cooper shop.

1874

From 1874 to the mid-80 ' s, Charles Burwell managed the Minnetonka Mill Company's operations.

1880

Development around the lake thrived in the 1880’s and 90’s.

1883

1902

Big Island, a park near the lake that was built in 1902, offered entertainment that people traveled miles for in order to experience.

1913

By 1913 farmers and land developers had joined their interests and platted more than one dozen residential subdivisions.

1917

After the mill's closing Burwell continued to live across the road from the mill and was one of the leading citizens of the community until his death in 1917 .

1950

Minnetonka became the 11th township in Hennepin County to join the growing list of governments switching to village status since the 1950 census.

1956

Then, in early June of 1956 landowners and developers petitioned St Louis Park for another 200 acres to be annexed out of Hopkins.

A flurry of annexations to Wayzata occurred over a five-week period in June and July of 1956.

1957

The Park Board was established in 1957.

1979

Ceil Robertson Marshall, wrote in her 1979 booklet, “Welcome to Glen Lake” that “Glen Lake has never been a town.

2017

In 2017, the city redefined it's brand with a new logo and visual identity standards.

2020

​The Charles H. Burwell House, located at 13209 E. McGinty Road, Minnetonka, will open for the 2020 tour season from June through September on Saturdays and Tuesdays.
