City of Moorhead company history timeline
Founded with the coming of the railroad in 1871, it was a natural transportation hub and river-crossing point, with overland road and rail traffic meeting the barges and, later, steamboats on the river.
Moorhead, city, seat (1872) of Clay county, western Minnesota, United States It lies along the Red River of the North across from Fargo, North Dakota, in a mixed-farming area.
The city was policed by town marshals beginning March 24, 1875.
On March 22, 1881, the Police Department was created.
Moorhead was officially incorporated in 1881, and later that same decade added electric, water, sewer, fire and police services.
The Moorhead campus was established in 1885 as one of several normal (teacher-training) schools in Minnesota.
By 1888, the department would grow to eight officers.
The suspect was convicted and executed on September 20, 1889.
When North Dakota became a state in 1889, the sale of alcohol was banned.
1899 – Officer Alexander "Sandy" McClean Struck by falling debris while clearing people away from a house fire in what is now Viking Ship Park north of the Hjemkomst Center.
1930 – Officer Roy Larson Shot and killed by Ray Liggett, a bank robber who fled from Fargo Police.
In 2000 the university’s name was officially changed from Moorhead State University to Minnesota State University Moorhead.
