City of Palm Beach Gardens company history timeline

1872

The first of the permanent pioneers arrived in 1872.

1880

Word of the area’s beauty spread northward and by 1880 the first hotel, the Coconut Grove House, opened to accommodate tourists.

1903

Soon renamed The Breakers, because so many guests wrote asking for a room “down by the breakers,” fire destroyed the hotel in 1903.

1911

The Town of Palm Beach was incorporated on April 17, 1911.

1955

By 1955, John D. MacArthur had accumulated thousands of acres of land in northern Palm Beach County through foreclosure and purchase.

1959

Palm Beach Gardens was incorporated as a “paper town” in 1959.

John D. MacArthur founded PBG in 1959.

1960

The 1960 Census recorded that the city officially had a population of one, apparently a squatter whom MacArthur had allowed to stay on his property.

1962

Howell L. Watkins Junior High School (now Middle School) opened in 1962 on Garden Boulevard (now MacArthur Boulevard). Edward M. Eissey, the first principal, later recalled how the school became the first Palm Beach Gardens City Hall:

1989

The city adopted an Art in Public Places ordinance in 1989 and has amassed an eclectic collection of works.

1999

In 1999, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur foundation sold its remaining share of the community.

2007

In January 2007, the great-grandson of impressionist artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Alexandre Renoir, presented a painting to the City of Palm Beach Gardens which depicts the Gardens banyan tree.
