Saint Joseph, byname St Joe, city, seat (1846) of Buchanan county, northwestern Missouri, United States It is located on the Missouri River (there bridged to Elwood, Kansas), 28 miles (45 km) north of Kansas City.
St Joseph became a hustling hub of excitement as thousands of settlers began moving westward, seeking fame and fortune after gold was discovered in 1848 in California.
Additional growth commenced in 1859, when the railroad reached St Joseph assuring its role as a supply and distribution point to the entire western half of the country.
The first Pony Express rider left the city on April 3, 1860, departing from Pikes Peak Stables, riding hard and fast to Sacramento.
