City of Starkville company history timeline

1835

By 1835, the county seat had been established at Boardtown, which changed its name to Starkville in honor of General John Stark, a hero of the Revolutionary War.

The town got its first bank in 1835.

1837

A local lawyer, David Ames, began a school in the log court house which had fifty pupils by 1837.

1839

The Baptists began their work in Starkville in 1839.

1870

The 1870's brought the first railroad into Starkville.

1878

He was also instrumental in 1878 in securing for Starkville the location of the new state agricultural and mechanical college.

Mississippi State University, founded as a land-grant college just southeast of Starkville in 1878, is now the city’s economic mainstay.

1880

Instruction began in 1880, and the early curriculum emphasized agriculture, business and industry, and science.

1900

By 1900, Starkville's population stood at 2,689, and it has expanded steadily to its present 18,458.

1934

The airport was opened in 1934 as the Starkville Municipal Airport.

1960

By the mid 1960's, most of the tenant housing was in a state of despair.

1967

In 1967, when the Urban Renewal Laws were adopted by the city of Starkville, Miss., the small neighborhood located between Mississippi State University and downtown Starkville was designated the Urban Renewal Area.
