Co-opportunity Market company history timeline

1974

Shortly before opening the store on August 24, 1974, the founding cooperators were having a group meeting in a borrowed storefront with the front door open because of the intense summer heat.

Co-opportunity Market began as a food-buying club of four in West Los Angeles in 1974.

1975

In November 1975, our founders received a $30,000 loan from local resident, Kathy Canada, to open a member-owned food cooperative.

1976

In anticipation of this growth, the Co-op incorporated in January 1976, and changed its status from a limited partnership to a cooperative corporation in July.

On July 4, 1976, members used their cars, vans and trucks to move all of the inventory and fixtures down Santa Monica Blvd. to the new store at 1530 Broadway.

When Bloomingfoods opened on July 24, 1976, many community members felt a real sense of ownership.

Co-opportunity elected its first Board of Directors in September 1976.

1981

In 1981 the former buying club incorporated in the State of Tennessee as non-profit club.

1990

By 1990, Bloomingfoods had posted annual sales of $1.3 million and had accumulated $100,000 in the bank.

1991

Rather than abandoning the original location, the Board of Directors decided to open a second co-op store in 1991.

1992

In 1992, member-owners approved the change that would require each new member-owner to invest a $90 refundable equity deposit in the co-op.

2001

In May 2001, the co-op purchased the Encore Café, on West Sixth Street.

In 2001, the co-op took another bold step by expanding once again.

2002

However, the most significant change came in 2002, when the Onion River Co-op entered into an agreement with the city of Burlington in which they would operate a grocery store on land leased from the city.

2005

This change signaled a new era and the former KCFC became Three Rivers Market, a genuine customer-owned cooperative business. Therefore, in 2005, the KCFC changed its structure from a dues-based club to an equity-based cooperative.

2006

When Will retired in 2006, the Co-op had cash in the bank and had become a financially solid, debt-free business, poised to thrive and grow even more.

2007

Bloomingfoods Near West SideOn July 4th, 2007, Bloomingfoods West opened at 6th and Madison.

2009

In 2009 Three Rivers Market purchased land at 1100 N. Central Street, less than 1/2 a mile from the old store, and developed a new store.
