Council on Social Work Education company history timeline

1952

Founded in 1952, the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) is the national association representing social work education in the United States.

1967

In 1967, the School of Social Work began providing statewide outreach programs through the University Extension Division.

1975

Following a national trend recognizing the undergraduate degree in social work as the first professional practice degree in the field, the bachelor of social work degree was offered at MU in 1975.

Also during 1975, the Master of Science in Social Work was renamed the Master of Social Work degree, and the BSW and MSW programs were offered as components of a five-year continuum curriculum.

1988

In 1988, the College of Public and Community Services was eliminated and the units within the college were reorganized on campus.

1991

1991 The School of Social Work moved from the Cohn building to the newly renovated historical Thompson Home.

1998

Recently, the National Association of Social Workers celebrated the profession’s centennial in 1998.

2000

In 2000, the school launched its nationally distinctive PhD program with an emphasis on state social policy.

2006

2006 In September, the first students were admitted into the School of Social Work Ph.D. program.

2008

2008 The Center for Social Work Practice and Policy Research was established.

2010

2010 The School of Social Work celebrated its 75th Anniversary.

2012

2012 In June, Cheryl E. Waites, Ed.D., M.S.W., A.C.S.W., became the 7th Dean of the School of Social Work.

2012 The Nation's First Dual-Title Program in Social Work and Infant Mental Health was established.

2012 The BSW WOW! (Where Online Works!) Program is launched allowing undergraduate students to complete their degree online.

2013

2013 The dual-title program in Social Work and Gerontology was approved for offering to all students enrolled in the MSW or PhD program in Social Work at Wayne State University.

2015

2015 The interdisciplinary PhD in Social Work and Anthropology (SWAN) was launched.

2018

2018 In June, Sheryl Kubiak became the 8th Dean of the School of Social Work.

2020

The School of Social Work joined the School of Health Professions in October 2020.
