Cumberland County Jail company history timeline

1844

The third execution in the county was carried out by Sheriff Harris Mattson, who in 1844 supervised the hanging of a servant girl who had poisoned her employers with arsenic.

1864

The last administration of capital punishment in Cumberland County took place in 1864, when two men were executed for the murder of a third man on April 28, 1864.

1865

From the years 1797 through 1865 there is a lapse in documentation of who was Sheriff during this time period.

1866

In 1866-67 a fourth jail was built in the county.

1867

In 1790, during Sheriff Joseph Buck's term, a new jail was built, a two story structure, which remained standing until 1867.

1870

The next recorded Sheriff was John Reily who held the Office of Sheriff until 1870.

1910

In 1910 N. H. McGeachy was elected to the Office of Sheriff in Cumberland County.

1950

Sheriff McGeachy served the County of Cumberland as Sheriff until 1950.

1958

In 1958 W. G. Clark was elected Sheriff of Cumberland County.

1975

In 1975, the Sheriff’s Office moved to the new Law Enforcement Center on Dick Street, under Jones’ administration.

1979

On June 2, 1979 two jail officers were taken hostage within the Cumberland County Jail.

1987

Sheriff Jones died while in office in 1987.

1994

Sheriff Bedsole remained Sheriff until 1994.

2017

On January 03, 2017, Ennis W. Wright was appointed Sheriff by County Commissioners with a unanimous vote.
