Davis Stuart company history timeline
Founded in 1919, as Davis-Stuart School, Inc., when George Davis and his wife, Mary Estelle Kinports Davis, donated their 574-acre farm near Lewisburg to the Presbyterian Church of West Virginia - a home for orphaned and dependent children was born.
The Egg Beater Series of 1927-28 is credited with catapulting him to this new level of fame in the American art scene.
In 1928 Davis traveled to France, where he spent a year painting relatively realistic street scenes in Paris.
During these years, Davis was an outspoken opponent of fascism and, in 1938, became the national chairman of the American Artists’ Congress.
Shortly thereafter, he began a relationship with Roselle Springer, whom he married in 1938.
