Position Responsibilities

JOB SUMMARY
Third Rail Electricians inspect, install, maintain and repair all portions of the 3rd rail system, snow melter system, shop Direct Current (DC) systems, and Alternating Current (AC) cable and conduit plant, to ensure the safe delivery of electrical DC power for distribution and train use.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Include but are not limited to:
* Install, maintain and replace third rail and associated components (e.g., brackets, insulators, protective covers, etc.) using gas powered, electric, battery-operated and hand tools to ensure proper functionality
* Inspect and maintain third rail systems including but not limited to snow-melters, shop bug systems, signal power systems and power distribution panels
* Excavate trenches under and around the right of way to install conduit and power cables
* Perform electrical connections using various methods (e.g., power bonding, exothermic welding, etc.)
* Install and connect cables for DC power to the third rail, AC feeders and negative circuits
* Participate in Power Department safety program and demonstrate an understanding of Power Department procedures
* Attend mandatory trainings (e.g., Roadway Worker Safety, etc.) to obtain/maintain all required qualifications to safely perform job duties
* Perform electrical work including switching, testing and repairs on live line electrical systems up to 1000-volt range
* Perform work on the third rail negative system to ensure safe and proper cab signal functionality by installing and maintaining negative return cables between signal boxes and running rails
* Perform roadway worker duties (e.g., remove track from service, perform Look-Out, etc.) to ensure the safety of the work group
* Recognize the hazards of electricity and the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required to perform electrical work safely
* Operate heavy equipment such as cranes, flatbed trucks, excavators and utility vehicles
* Assess situations to identify possible hazards and take appropriate safety precautions (e.g., PPE usage, etc.)
* Obtain electrical clearances and provide electrical Lock out Tag out protection

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
* High School Diploma or equivalent and
* Valid NYS Driver's License or equivalent and

RATE OF PAY
The starting rate for this position is $29.68/hour (70% of the full rate).
The annual wage progression scale is as follows Year 1=65% > Year 2=70% > Year 3=75% > Year 4=80% > Year 5=92% > Year 6=100%. The full rate of pay is $45.67/hour.
This rate has been established by the collective bargaining unit and is non-negotiable.
An exception may be granted for a journeyman rate to anyone who has one of the following:
New Hire candidates who meet one (1) or more of the criterion as enumerated below will qualify for the expedited wage progression for Journeymen:
* Four (4) years of full-time experience as an Electrical Worker; which includes the following job titles and industries:
* Electrical, Electronics, or Communications Worker in the Armed Forces

DETAILS OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:

Performs electrical installations, maintenance and repairs on related, building systems, and equipment in accordance with the Canadian Electrical Code, BC Fire Code and BC Building Code. Maintains electrical inventory, recommends system and equipment upgrades and replacements, and performs other related duties as required to ensure all campuses remain operational at all times. Public and staff safety is priority.
Functions and Duties
1. Installs, repairs, troubleshoots and maintains complex electrical distribution systems, motor control centers, switch gear, lighting systems, appliances, electric motors, solar PV systems, variable frequency drives and related control systems.
2. Works with programmable logic controllers and software systems that control lighting, machinery, complex building systems, intrusion security systems and card access.
3. Works with a variety of building management systems components such as electronic hardware and control logic. Troubleshoots repairs or installs new HVAC building controls. Involved with software configuration and programming parameters.
4. Performs scheduled preventative maintenance to ensure a safe and healthy work environment.
5. Provides feedback to the Lead Electrician and Manager, Plant Services & Operations , plans projects and prepares material lists and cost estimates.
6. Maintains all campus fire systems and conducts annual inspection, testing, repairing, troubleshooting , verifying and maintaining accurate records in accordance with the current Canadian Underwriters Laboratories, National Fire Protection Association and the local municipal jurisdictions. The individual will be required to respond to emergency incidents related to electrical and fire systems.
7. Supports and maintains all Life Safety Systems such as emergency backup generators, fire alarm, chemical suppression systems, fire sprinklers, emergency lighting systems and is part of the fire drill coordination.
8. Keeps necessary system records such as log books, records and tool inventories. Addressing work order requests and providing technical support. Responsible for handling and processing cash for off campus transactions and completing monthly reconciliations. Is involved in planning strategies with Manager, Plant Services & Operations and the Lead Electrician.
9. Continuous ongoing training for all aspects of health and safety requirements. Can include to be certified in aerial lift, crane operations, fork lift certification, confined space, hazardous materials, arc flash, electrical safety, MSDS and electrical code requirements.
10. Recommends equipment and systems upgrading to Manger, Plant Services & Operations and the Lead Electrician. Maintains electrical inventory.
Communicates coordinates directly with administration, staff, students, local suppliers, contractors, Occupational Health & Safety, Technical Safety BC, local fire departments.
11. Reporting hazards and apply safe work methods continually, such as lock out procedures and work plans. Incorrect or inappropriate actions could result in significant safety hazards to the College infrastructure, staff, students, and faculty. It can also impact major delay to the daily operations of the College such as to classes and IT Services infrastructure. Reduced service can have significant financial repercussions.
12. This position is responsible to recommend and implement energy management strategies that reduce electrical utility usage and significant cost to the organization.
13. Frequent travel to all Okanagan College campuses to provide electrical technical support, system maintenance and repair.
14. Performs emergency and standby duties as required. Responds to urgent College situations such as power disruptions, fire alarms and IT Services main data center interruptions

Education and Experience
Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent plus completion of trades training to Electrical Journeyman status. Valid Class 5 driver's license is also required. Over 6 years progressive related experience.
