First Baptist Dallas company history timeline

1868

The First Baptist Church of Dallas was established on July 30, 1868, with eleven founding members.

1872

In 1872, the congregation pooled their funds together to purchase the first building, on Akard, in downtown Dallas.

1889

R. T. Hanks was installed as pastor, and served until the close of the year 1889.

1890

The cornerstone of First Baptist Dallas was laid in 1890 by a small group of believers determined to begin a Baptist church in downtown Dallas.

1891

The cornerstone of the sanctuary that the congregation worships in today was laid in 1891.

1905

The total collections by the church for all purposes in the year 1905, was $28,675.09.

1908

The Sunday School collections for the year ending April 30th, 1908, were $1,800.00.

1956

In 1956, Criswell spoke at the State Evangelism Conference in South Carolina.

1968

Criswell’s election to the presidency of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) in 1968 marked the beginning “battle” of the conservative takeover of the denomination.

In the 1968 convention, the SBC voted to integrate its churches and welcome all races to membership.

2009

First Baptist first embarked on the now completed building campaign in 2009, during the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression.

1, 2009, the leadership of First Baptist recommended to its congregation plans to build a new 21st-century campus, unveiling the proposed $130-million project designed to be a re-creation, not a renovation, of the original facilities.

2011

The church officially broke ground on the new construction on July 11, 2011.

2013

In 2013, Ted Cruz, invited by Robert Jeffress, attended the church and gave a speech on faith and the United States Constitution to the congregation.

In 2013, a 3,000 seat Worship Center and expansion was built at the cost of $130 million, close to the historic building.
