Hagerstown Community College company history timeline

1946

- September 18, 1946: HJC holds its first classes.

In September 1946, Hagerstown Junior College opened its doors to Washington County and has since served as a "gem for generations."

Hagerstown Community College (HCC) was founded in 1946 as Maryland’s first community college.

From its humble beginnings in 1946, and despite early community sentiment that was not overly supportive of higher education, the college grew and flourished.

1948

- June 1, 1948: First commencement is held presenting degrees to 25 students.

1951

- January 1951: First alumni organization formed.

1953

- January 1953: Atlee C. Kepler appointed dean of the college.

1956

- September 1956: HJC moves to the South Hagerstown High School campus.

- Fall 1956: Irv Easterday named director of athletics.

1961

- 1961: Doctor Kepler named president of Hagerstown Junior College.

1965

As enrollment continued to increase, plans were made to find a suitable location to accommodate the growth, and in 1965, ground was broken on land that is now home to the thriving campus on Robinwood Drive.

1966

The first classes were held at the new location in September of 1966, with 782 students.

1968

- January 1968: HJC takes over nursing program from Washington County Hospital.

The College has maintained accreditation by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education since its first review in 1968 and continues to meet the requirements necessary to maintain that accreditation.

- 1968: Hagerstown Junior College Foundation formed.

1978

- October 1978: Kepler Theater opens.

1988

- 1988: Athletic, Recreation and Community Center opens on campus.

1989

- 1989: Old gymnasium transformed into the Advanced Technology Center.

1994

- 1994: Technical Innovation Center opens.

1995

- 1995: The college opens a satellite location at the Valley Mall.

1998

- July 1, 1998: HJC becomes Hagerstown Community College

2000

- Fall 2000: Learning Resource Center opens, featuring the William Brish Library.

2002

- 2002: Former HCC Library is renovated and opens as the College Center.

2003

Since 2003, early college enrollment has grown to nearly 900 high school students who take HCC classes each year through the ESSENCE Program and the Middle College.

- Fall 2003: ESSENCE Program begins.

2004

- January 2004 – HCC becomes home to Washington County’s Adult Education Program.

2009

- 2009: Renovated Career Programs Building opens, with Merle S. Elliott Continuing Education and Conference Center.

2012

- 2012: STEM Building and Kepler Performing and Visual Arts Education Center open.

2013

- August 2013 – HCC launches STEMM Technical Middle College.

- 2013: Behavioral Sciences and Humanities Building, Fletcher Faculty Development Center, and Learning Support Center opens.

2015

- 2015: Expanded and renovated Student Center opens.

- Fall 2015: The roundabout at the Robinwood Drive entrance is complete.

2016

- 2016: Yale Drive entrance opens.

2019

- April 2019: HCC announces the official start of its campaign to establish Washington County as the first ACT Work Ready Community in Maryland.

- 2019: Energy and Trades Training Center opens.

2021

- 2021: Center for Business and Entrepreneurial Studies opens.
