Haleakala Construction company history timeline

1821

Doctor Holman was the first Christian missionary to arrive in Maui in 1821.

1823

In May 1823, the next missionaries were invited by Queen Kaʻahumanu to open a formal mission in Lāhainā. The missionaries were Reverends William Richards and Charles Stewart and their wives.

1825

She left Maui in 1825.

1828

1828: First written record of an ascent to the summit of Haleakalā is made by three missionaries.

1831

In 1831, Pastors Jonathan Green and Reuben Tinker established a congregation in Wailuku.

1846

A Catholic missionary, Father Aubert arrived in Lahaina in 1846 to establish the fist Catholic parish in Maui.

1848

In 1848, a new land redistribution scheme, called the Great Mahele, was established.

1864

In 1864, Doctor William Hildebrand suggested that a place be established to isolate those who were infected.

1870

By 1870, 13 churches were established in different locations in Maui.

1878

In 1878, Thomas Hobron built the first narrow railroad in Maui.

1884

The port was rebuilt and improved in 1884.

1890

In 1890, pineapple was planted as an experimental crop by David and Henry Baldwin.

1890's: Nēnē, the Hawaiian goose, no longer found on the island of Maui due to predation by introduced cats, rats, and mongeese, as well as habitat destruction.

1898

1898: The Republic of Hawai`i is annexed as a territory of the United States.

1903

The pineapples thrived well in Maui which lead to the foundation of Hai'ku Fruit and Packing Company in 1903.

1905

In 1905, the Maui County was established.

1916

After years of persis-tence, Haleakalā was first established as part of Hawai'i National Park in 1916.

1920

Ranching is established in Kīpahulu after sugar production ends in the mid-1920's.

1922

Grazing of cattle begins on the slopes of Haleakalā. Cattle are pastured in Haleakalā Crater until 1922.

1927

The first airport in Maui was built in 1927 at Maalea.

1936

In 1936, larger planes were introduced by Inter-Island Airlines.

1937

The backcountry cabins were built in 1937.

1938

In 1938, the Maalea airport was closed down and Puunene Airport was opened.

1942

Because the airport still needed improvements and expansion, the military sought to build a new Naval Air Station in 1942.

1946

The first hotel in Maui, Hotel Hana, opened in 1946.

1951

1951: Kīpahulu Valley is authorized for inclusion into Haleakalā National Park.

1959

1959: Hawai`i becomes the 50th state.

1961

In 1961, the first resort community in Maui opened at Ka'anapali.

1961: Hawai`i National Park's units are separated and re-designated as Haleakalā National Park and Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park.

1963

Observatory built at Red Hill in 1963.

1969

In 1969, the Kīpahulu coastal area of 'Ohe'o was included, further extending the boundaries of Haleakalā. Today, 24,719 of Haleakalā's 30,183 acres are designated Wilderness.

The first hippies arrived in Maui in 1969.

1974

1974: Crater Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

1976

1976: Fencing of park boundary begins.

1999

1999: Ka`apahu lands are added to Haleakalā National Park.

2008

2008: Nu`u lands are added to Haleakalā National Park.
