The Islamic State – also known as ISIS, ISIL, or Daesh – emerged from the remnants of al Qaeda in Iraq (AQI), a local offshoot of al Qaeda founded by Abu Musab al Zarqawi in 2004.
2004: Abu Musab al Zarqawi establishes al Qaeda in Iraq (AQI).
2009: Iraqi Prime Minister Maliki targets Sunni leaders, increasing sectarian tensions.
The group changed its name to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) in 2013.
April 11: Iraqi forces seize the town of Hit, which had been under ISIS control since October 2014.
28: Islamic State fighters in Libya set up an army of at least three brigades in the desert after losing their stronghold of Sirte in December 2016, according to a senior prosecutor.
The Baghdadi era of ISIS ended on October 26, 2019, when the leader was killed in a United States raid in northern Syria.
