Lincoln Academy history

Lincoln Academy opened in October 1805 in a wooden building on River Road in Newcastle with 74 student attending that year.

In 1815, the Oakdale School was built by contributions from community families.

In 1828, the first building burned and a new structure was built on Academy Hill.

A new school was built in 1880 a short distance from the Oakdale School.

The School replaced the Evans School, which was moved from the old Dodge site in 1884.

Since its beginning in 1895, Lincoln has undergone many building transitions and renovations.

When Lincoln School became overcrowded, some elementary students moved to the Oakdale School building until another new school opened in November 1909 at the present site of Lincoln Elementary School.

Doctor Fisher, a 1941 graduate of Lincoln School, was one of the first African Americans to integrate the University of Oklahoma School of Law.

Board of Regents, in which the U. S. Supreme Court on January 12, 1948, ruled unanimously (9-0), to force the University of Oklahoma law school to admit Ada Lois Sipuel, the school’s first African American student.

High school students remained in this building until 1955, when the new Loudoun County High School opened.

In 2011, Lincoln Academy was $1.25 million in debt with a $5 million endowment.

Over several years, the school fell into a $10 million debt with only $7.5 million endowment in 2016.

Her son, Harrison is in the class of 2023 and her sons, Hamilton and Anderson are in the class of 2026. It was a natural progression and long time goal of moving to Midcoast Maine with her husband and children that was realized in 2018.
