Founded in 1973 as Maine Photographic Workshops by David H. Lyman, the school soon grew to offer film, television and AA degree programs as Rockport College.
Major 20th century photography developments are discussed: New Topographics, The Rise of Color Photography as a medium, The Culture Wars of the 1980’s and Postmodernism.

In 2013 the school built a book arts studio and offers courses in handmade books using letterpress printing.
CORE VALUES Maine Media College has adopted a set of Core Values as of June, 2016.
In 2016, the Foundation approached MMW to host and administer the annually funded prize, and scholarships at the school.
In 2020, the Foundation gifted an $1.125 million endowment to MMW to offer the prize and scholarships in perpetuity–or at least for a very long time.
