The MedicalAssistant performs clinical and administrative duties in an ambulatory care setting under the supervision of a physician/provider and/or a registered nurse. Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies procedures quality and safety standards. Complies with governmental regulations and accreditation standards.
Assists providers with patient preparation for the examination minor office procedures and with the examination and education of patients. Supports other members of the clinical care team assuring optimal best-practice patient flow; manages variable and unpredictable patient volume throughout the workday. Participates in daily team huddles to review and prepare for scheduled patient visits. Conducts surveillance for transitions of care urgent/emergent care or follow up tasks such as retrieval of documents associated with referrals/testing.
Conducts motivational interviews that include patient screening and/or coaching on disease management ability motivation to change learning care needs and community outreach needs. Identifies potential behavioral health needs of patients using appropriate screening tools and notifies provider of findings.
As part of a High-Reliability Organization reports actual and potential problems concerning patients families and associates using established reporting protocols for MedStar Health and/or work location. Participates in performance improvement initiatives to improve care quality and safety.
Ensures ongoing compliance with regulatory accreditation and quality/safety standards by maintaining and auditing temperature logs ensuring medication supplies are current/unexpired checking and maintaining emergency equipment area free of clutter and other related tasks.
Participates in population management activities including an awareness of the populations served and engages the patient in self-management support care/health goal setting pre-visit planning and the capturing of information that leads to health care improvement activities.
Performs selected patient and laboratory testing consistent with the scope of the practice including but not limited to Point of Care Testing tuberculosis skin testing electrocardiography pulmonary function tests and vision and hearing testing (dependent upon provider and site requirements). Removes sutures/staples after the provider has examined the patient and written the appropriate order. Provides escort for patients and assists with patient discharge activities. Provides chaperoning for patients per policy.
Fulfills infection prevention and environmental responsibilities as assigned which many include: Light cleaning during clinic hours and cleaning of equipment. Updates appropriate records of scheduled equipment maintenance and manages drug and medical supply inventories.
Provides telephone screening services to gather information from patients determine appropriate disposition and document per established telephone screening protocols.
Under onsite provider supervision may insert intravenous catheter for physician initiated IV fluid therapy or administration of intravenous medications. Under direct onsite physician supervision may insert remove and monitor urinary catheter for procedures and prepare and administer oral drugs and injections limited to intradermal subcutaneous and intramuscular. May perform phlebotomy.
Utilizes the EMR to propose patient medication refills for provider approval. Completes requisitions for tests (if applicable). Contacts insurance companies for Pre-authorizations for patient medications and specialty referrals including insurance authorization.
Floats to other sites/locations within the system as appropriate and performs all duties at multiple sites.
Attends scheduled meetings including but not limited to regular staff meetings and training classes for safety infection control OSHA CLIA BLS and others as required.

Overview:
The Certified MedicalAssistant performs a complete range of basic clinical, billing, and clerical services in an outpatient behavioral health setting, under the direction of a registered nurse and/or physician.
Major Duties and Essential Functions:
Being cross trained throughout the clinic.
Greeting, receiving, and preparing patients.
Maintaining the examination areas.
Receiving and screening telephone calls.
Scheduling appointments and coordinating patient flow.
Provides information per department/Hospital policy, and/or routes calls to appropriate personnel.
Takes and forwards messages as appropriate.

Obtains relevant diagnostic test results prior to patient appointment.
Greets patients, visitors, and staff to the office, determines their need(s) and assists/ directs them accordingly.
Registers patients in the patient registration system as well as in any applicable department system confirming insurance information and securing applicable documentation. Accepts payments.
Prepares patient to be seen by physician; escorts patient to examination room and takes vital signs and records them in the patient chart.
Assists physician in examinations/procedures. Cleans and prepares exam/procedure room between patients.
Follows up with patients and conveys information to physician.
Maintains patient charts/departmental files/records/logs, including billing and appointment records/logs. Pre-registers out-patients for next day appointments.
Inventories and orders office and clinical supplies and equipment for the department and obtaining equipment repair/maintenance. Checks equipment to ensure proper functioning. Assures accuracy of billing; forwards bill(s) to appropriate department personnel for payment.
Receives and reviews all incoming mail to the department. Opens, sorts, and distributes mail, as appropriate.
Enters data into databases/logs for statistical purposes. Creates, maintains, and adapts spreadsheets and electronic computer files as requested. Prepares routine correspondence and may transcribe dictated physician notes as required.
Requirements/Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum of 2 years' experience working in a clinical or ambulatory setting.
Preferably with patients with psychiatric/behavioral health disorders.
Must be flexible to adjust to the needs of a fast-paced environment, demonstrate effective problem-solving skills and display excellent oral/written communication skills.
High school diploma or GED is required.
Bachelor's degree is strongly preferred.
Must have completed an accredited MedicalAssistant program.

WHAT IS A MEDICAL SCRIBE? A medical scribe is a trained documentation specialist who charts patient encounters in real-time. Scribes will be working for clinic physicians and will be exposed to medical procedures, medical terminology, and anatomy and physiology.
WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:
Accompany physicians to accurately record and document patient visits and procedures.
Create and review medical charts for accuracy and completion in accordance with practice guidelines.
Assist in completing charts by transcribing results of patient and doctor consultations.
Record diagnosis, discharge, prescriptions, and/or follow-up instructions.
Perform other duties as assigned by practice manager or physician.

Responsibilities/Duties/Functions/Tasks:
Escort patients to and from the exam room, preparing the patient for their examination.
Enter complete medical histories along with patients' current medications into the chart.

Assist with setting up biopsies, excisions, suture removals, and cosmetic procedures.
Prepare and collect path/lab specimens, notify patients of results, and schedule follow-up appointments.

Laboratory maintenance that includes cleaning and autoclaving instruments.
Other duties as assigned to the back office.
Qualifications
Education:
High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required.
Certified MedicalAssistant preferred but not required.
MedicalAssistant training is required.
Qualifications:
Must have 1-2 years of experience working in a medical office as a medicalassistant.
Prior Dermatology and cosmetic experience is preferred.
Quality written and verbal communication skills with attention to detail.
Strong phone etiquette.

Professional in appearance and mannerisms.
Able to demonstrate compassion and caring when dealing with others, patients, and co-workers.
