Mountain View Inn company history timeline
Founded in 1865, this fantastic resort has since evolved from a quaint farmhouse to a massive multistory holiday destination.
1866: Encouraged by their success, the Dodges quickly built a special annex onto their farmhouse that would provide exclusive guestrooms for their future patrons.
1866—Official opening as an Inn and first addition to the home is made
In 1872, the two constructed a massive manor to replace their farmhouse, which they later grew in size over the next two decades.
1872: As the number of visitors increased, so too did William and Mary’s ambitions to expand upon the business.
In 1891-92, they built another three-story addition.
1912: Among the expansions that Van Dodge oversaw was the creation of a beautiful belvedere tower.
Under their direction until 1919, the Mountain View was transformed from a medium-sized country inn to a substantial resort complex.
1919: Herbert Van Dodge retired from managing the Mountain View House and handed over its control to his own son, Franklin Schyuler Dodge.
1927: Franklin Schyuler Dodge oversaw the entire renovation of the Mountain View House’s historic main building.
1979: John eventually stepped away from the business, which made Franklin Schuyler Dodge Jr. the sole owner.
2001—$20 million renovation including interior demolition, exterior construction and landscaping begin
Rechristened as the “Mountain View Grand Resort & Spa,” the complex debuted in May of 2002 to thunderous applause.
2002: The developers finally concluded the extensive restoration of the Mountain View House and reopened it to thunderous applause that May.
2007: The Mountain View Grand Resort & Spa became a member of Historic Hotels of America, the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation for recognizing the nation’s finest historic destinations.
