National Label company history timeline

1844

He received the land – called El Potrero de Santa Clara – via a grant from Mexican Governor Manuel Micheltorena in 1844.

In 1844, James Alexander Forbes acquired the parcel of land on which the Muirson Label Company would later build its headquarters.

1853

In 1853, he dispatched Christopher A. Shelton to California with a large inventory of stock for the nursery, which the Santa Clara Valley desperately lacked.

1876

The 1876 map of the area around the Alameda and Stockton Avenue shows the diversity of activity in the neighborhood.

1894

Rambo was born in San Jose in 1894 and grew up on a prune orchard near present-day Cupertino.

1904

Built in 1904, the Jose Theater was one of the city’s most popular Vaudeville stages and movie houses.

1906

The Pure Food and Drug Act, passed in 1906, created a federal agency charged with protecting the nation’s consumers, today called the Food and Drug Administration.

1907

Binder designed San Jose’s first steel frame building, the 7-story Garden City Bank Building, which was completed in 1907.

1911

The Montgomery Hotel opened in 1911.

1916

Del Monte was the premium brand marketed by the California Fruit Canners Association, which became part of the California Packing Corporation in 1916.

1930

1965

1966

He held the title of Art Director until his retirement in 1966.

1968

Ralph Rambo wrote that Bentley was “a gay blade with irresistible personality and charm” who “had the inherent propensity of combining successful business transactions with the joy of living.” Robert Bentley died in 1968 at the age of 80.

1970

1973

San Jose, CA: Rosicrucian Press, 1973.Plant Life: A Rambling Treatise on the rearing and early culture of a common indoor plan (Muirson labellus) / by Homer Sapiens.

After 1973, scientific knowledge about the relationship between diet and health grew rapidly, and, as a result, consumers wanted to have more information on food labels, particularly on the labels of processed and packaged foods.

1975

1987

1990

The NLEA’s requirements for the content of the nutrition label were very similar to those in FDA’s 1990 proposal except that the NLEA included complex carbohydrates and sugars in the list of required nutrients.

1998

That campaign changed food labeling and marketing dramatically, as other companies, in the absence of regulatory action, began making similar claims (Geiger, 1998).

Prior to the 1998 date, FDA and USDA received petitions from a food manufacturer asking that the more restrictive second tier be eliminated or at least delayed until there were advances in food technology that allowed for the development of acceptable products with reduced sodium content.

2001

The theater reopened as the home of the San Jose Improv in late 2001.

2003

The Muirson buildings, listed as Structures of Merit on the City of San Jose Historic Resources Inventory, were razed in 2003, despite the efforts of local preservationists to save them.

2004

Among other topics, the committee’s report, entitled Calories Count: Report of the Working Group on Obesity (FDA, 2004), addressed food labeling issues pertaining to serving sizes and the design of the Nutrition Facts panel.
