In September 1887, the cornerstone was laid for Old Main, which became the central building of the campus.
In the fall of 1887, Nebraska Wesleyan University began its first year with 96 students.
Still with no stairways, windows, or flooring on some floors, classes began in September 1888.
First United Methodist Church was founded in 1888 by men and women who were devoted to Christ’s teachings and dedicated to the education that Nebraska Wesleyan University (NWU) would provide the families of University Place.
The first graduating class was four women in 1890.
Sunflowers grew abundantly around the campus and, in 1894, the sunflower was adopted as the "official emblem" along with its yellow and brown colors.
The class of 1895's memorial stone still stands northwest of Old Main.
Gradually, enthusiasm for athletics grew and by 1907, the Sunflower emblem was exchanged for a Coyote.
Even in 1955, social networks mattered.
1971 was a liberating year for NWU students.
The 1981 Plainsman Players were the first to perform at The Elder Memorial Speech and Theatre Center which was dedicated that same year.
In 2000, the pep band cheered on the newly minted Prairie Wolves football team.
