MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EITHER I Experience: The equivalent of eighteen (18) months of experience as a Deputy Sheriff I in the Alameda County classified Service and possession of a California Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Basic certificate. OR II Experience: A minimum of 36 months full-time experience as a Peace Officer in a California law enforcement agency (municipal or state police department, Sheriff's department, or California Highway Patrol) with a separation date within 36 months of application date and possession of a California POST Basic certificate. OR III Experience: A minimum of 36 months full-time experience as a peace officer in a law enforcement agency outside of California and possession of a valid Basic Course Waiver (BCW) issued by California POST. AND License: Valid California State Motor Vehicle Operator's license by date of appointment. Age: Must be at least 21 years of age at time of appointment. Citizenship: Candidates are not required to be a US citizen but must be legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law. (SB 960). * Sign a mobility agreement stating your willingness to accept assignments anywhere within the United States and overseas.
* Certify that you have registered with the Selective Service System or are exempt from having to do so, if you are a male applicant born after December 31, 1959.
* Must have uncorrected vision of at least 20/100, correctable to 20/20 in each eye. LASIK, ALK, RK, and PRK surgeries are acceptable if required post-surgery visual tests are passed: Lasik (3 months), PRK (6 months), ALK/RK (1 year) waiting periods apply.
* Hearing loss, as measured by an audiometer, must not exceed 25 decibels (A.S.A. or equivalent I.S.O.) in either ear in the 500,1000 and 2000Hz ranges.
Qualifications

It is a physical fitness assessment which consists of four components (push-ups, sit-ups, Illinois Agility Run and a 1.5 Mile Run). General Medical Requirements: As determined by OPM the duties of this position require moderate to arduous physical exertion involving walking and standing, use of firearms, and exposure to inclement weather. Manual dexterity with comparatively free motion of fingers, wrist, elbows, shoulders, hips and knee joints is required. Arms, hands, legs and feet must function sufficiently in order for applicants to perform the duties satisfactorily.

* Recruitment Incentive: Applicants may be eligible for a $40,000 recruitment incentive in accordance with regulatory requirements. The first installment of $15,000 will be paid following successful completion of Secret Service Criminal Investigator training. A second installment of $10,000 will be paid following one year of service post training and an acceptable performance rating. The final installment of $15,000 will be paid after a third year of service post training and an acceptable performance rating. Provision of these payments require the execution of a three-year Continued Service Agreement (CSA) with the agency. Newly hired employees who resign from the USSS prior to the expiration of the CSA will be required to repay the recruitment incentive. (NOTE: Eligibility is limited to "Newly appointed" Federal employees as defined by 5 CFR 575.102).
Applicants selected for this position will be required to sign a CSA before being assigned to an initial training class. The CSA will commit the applicant to a specified period of employment with the Secret Service upon the successful completion of training.

**Job Purpose**
Employees hired into the entry level, non-sworn Deputy Sheriff Cadet (trainee) position will be assigned to attend a California P.O.S.T. certified basic police training academy or a regular basic academy requalification course, if applicable. Candidates who meet department performance expectations and successfully pass the basic police academy or meet the requalification criteria will be sworn in as a Reserve Deputy Sheriff for Santa Clara County in accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding between the University and the Sheriff of Santa Clara County. This agreement provides for the deputization of Stanford Deputies as sworn peace officers, having full law enforcement powers to make arrest and enforce state laws and county ordinances pursuant to section 830.6 of the California Penal Code. Upon deputization, the incumbent will enter the Field Training program as a probationary Deputy Sheriff.
At the academy, the Deputy Sheriff Cadet will receive basic training that complies with the standards set by the California Commission of Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T). The basic training program includes approximately 920 hours of academic classes, hands-on training and physical conditioning. Knowledge-based training includes, but is not limited to: Criminal Law, Patrol Procedures, Cultural Diversity, Investigative Procedures, Report Writing, Defensive Tactics, Firearms, Leadership, Ethics, Community Policing, Police Vehicle Operations, Traffic Enforcement, Accident Investigation, Handling Emotional Situations and First Aid/CPR. Hands-on training includes, but not limited to: weapons training, role playing scenarios, patrol procedures, emergency vehicle operations, and arrest and control techniques. Recruits are required to complete 80 hours of instruction in defensive tactics which includes ground control, baton training, control holds and take downs. The physical conditioning program consists of specific performance tests and a program of physical training. The training includes running (distance and speed), push-ups, sit-ups, weight training and calisthenics.
During the course of their work, the Deputy Sheriff Cadet will be exposed to potentially dangerous and adverse conditions. The Deputy Sheriff Cadet must be willing and able to work in emergency situations, confined spaces, and intense life-threatening conditions. Cadets will be exposed to persons whose actions may place them in harm's way. Cadets will be exposed to bodily fluids, fumes, moving objects, and noise. Candidates must be physically able to work in circumstances requiring running, jumping, walking, crawling, kneeling, climbing, stooping, pulling and moderate lifting.

TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:
* Conducts administrative and preparatory activities such as inspecting personal equipment and uniform, inspecting video and audio equipment (e.g., body cam, body mic), maintaining firearm and vehicle, and attending roll call.

* Handles hazardous situations by alerting the appropriate emergency response agency(ies), evacuating persons, identifying hazardous materials, notifying dispatcher, and establishing and maintaining a perimeter until the situation has been resolved.
* Enforces and regulates traffic and motor vehicle rules by monitoring for traffic law infractions, pulling over vehicles in violation of laws, verifying driver and vehicle identification, observing driver and passenger behavior, administering field sobriety tests, and issuing warnings and citations to drivers.
* Renders medical assistance by evaluating the scene, assessing the condition of an individual, providing first aid, requesting medical emergency personnel, and transporting individual to hospital or jail if needed.
* Deals with juveniles by placing juvenile under investigating detention or custody, notifying guardians, dispersing congregated juveniles and providing police presence, and transporting juveniles to appropriate locations as needed.
* Handles disputes and conflicts by observing the parties present, separating parties, restraining parties when necessary, interviewing parties, taking written statements and photographs of injuries, and providing parties with information to resolve the conflict.
* Controls crowds by establishing police lines, observing the behavior of participants, ensuring groups have valid permits, maintaining control using verbal commands and physical force as needed, ensuring state laws and local ordinances are adhered to, and requesting backup resources as necessary.
* Completes reports (e.g., incident, evidence, arrest, activities) and written documentation (e.g., summons, notes for other officers) and forwards to chain of command and appropriate parties.
* Performs court-related activities such as keeping track of court dates, reviewing documentation and revisiting incident scene to refresh memory, explaining details of case to attorneys, presenting testimony, and answering questions under oath.
* Cooperates with and makes referrals to other agencies (i.e., federal, state, and local) by submitting information to appropriate authorities, determining the circumstances of incidents, initiating notifications (e.g., stolen car, missing person) to other units and/or jurisdictions, and participating in joint actions with other law enforcement agencies.
* Interacts with the public and performs community relation activities such as contacting friends and/or families of victims, responding to citizen requests for assistance, communicating with business owners in patrol area, interacting with local parties (e.g., officials, school principals, citizen groups, civic associations) to discuss police services and/or criminal activity, and conducting presentations to local groups to promote public safety.

* Maintains jails and inmates in custody by ensuring inmate safety and well-being, transporting inmates, and searching inmates and jail for weapons and unauthorized objects.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Job is primarily sedentary involving sitting for long periods, but occasionally involves moderate to heavy physical exertion required for occasional prolonged periods of lifting, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, or running. May involve occasional lifting of items or objects weighing up to 75 lbs. Responsibilities:
Patrol: Conduct routine security patrols across over 400 acres of campus property and off-campus sites, including more than 68 buildings and structures. A valid driver's license is required for this position. Out of state candidates selected for the position must obtain a State of California driver's license within 10 days of hire in accordance with the California Department of Motor Vehicles regulations.
