Power Pool Inc company history timeline

1999

The Power Pool organized a non-profit corporation in Oregon in 1999 called Service Corporation to carry out some of its functions; Service Corporation is separate from the Power Pool and has its own agreements with the member utilities.

2000

2000 encourages voluntary formation of Regional Transmission Organizations (RTOs) to administer transmission grid regionally throughout North America, and delineates twelve required characteristics and functions

2001

Following Regional System Plan—ISO’s “roadmap” of system needs started in 2001—infrastructure upgrades well underway in New England, with 75 projects placed in service, totaling $217 million in transmission investment

2002

Over 200 transmission projects placed into service, totaling more than $1 billion in investment since 2002

PJM became the nation’s first fully functioning RTO in 2002.

2004

Cold snap sets winter peak demand of 22,818 MW on January 15, 2004

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) approved SPP as a Regional Transmission Organization in 2004.

2005

In 2005, the Western Systems Power Pool changed its name to better reflect its expanding footprint and the ever-evolving structure of the electric utility industry.

2011

As anticipated by Strategic Planning Initiative challenge #2, retirements announced for several of region’s largest and typically oldest generators, representing loss of about 3,300 MW since 2011

2014

Since the marketplace launched in 2014, it has reduced the cost of electricity in our region by more than $4.2 billion, providing market participants hundreds of millions of dollars in net savings annually.

In 2014, it expanded its training to an online service.

2015

SPP expanded its RTO operations in 2015 to serve all or parts of 14 states.

2016

By 2016 the Northwest Power Pool membership had grown to 31 entities.

The Northwest Power Pool as of 2016 had four major committees: the Operating Committee, the Transmission Planning Committee, the Pacific Northwest Coordination Agreement Coordinating Group, and the Reserve Sharing Group Committee.

2019

Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant, another of region’s largest generators at 677 MW, announces plans to close by June 1, 2019, as non-gas-fired generating capacity in region continues to decline

In 2019, it launched the first of its Western Energy Services, Western Reliability Coordination, expanding its service territory to encompass parts of 17 states.

2020

The total savings and benefits achieved by SPP’s members in 2020 was $2.137 billion, compared to $155.3 million in net revenue requirement costs, a benefit-to-cost ratio of 14-to-1.

2021

The Western Energy Imbalance Service (WEIS) Market launched in 2021 and provides customers in the Western Interconnection the benefits of a real-time balancing market.
