1900

Deming was born in 1900, and by the age of 28 had gained degrees in in engineering, mathematics and physics, and a doctorate in mathematical physics from Yale.

1910

Henry Gantt popularized the Gantt chart only a few decades earlier in about 1910, allowing a new way to visualize projects.

1911

In 1911, mechanical engineer Frederick Winslow Taylor published The Principles of Scientific Management.

1924

In 1924, Western Electric engineer Walter Shewhart proposed a method for statistical quality control.

1931

One of its first uses was on the Hoover Dam project started in 1931.

1939

Deming worked with the US Census Bureau from 1939, and his development of Shewhart’s statistical process control innovations resulted in a six-fold increase in productivity.

1940

Change and development were brought forth during the 1940’s by industry leaders and experts like Deming, Dodge, Juran and Roming.

It was also during the 1940’s that Japan caught wind of Total Quality Management.

1951

He also began writing what would become his acclaimed Quality Control Handbook, which was first published by McGraw-Hill in 1951.

1954

In 1954, the Union of Japanese Scientists and Engineers invited Juran to Japan to discuss the theories and techniques he had developed over the years.

1956

Early practitioners of project management and the associated specialities of planning and scheduling, cost estimating, cost and schedule control formed the AACE in 1956.

1958

A quick look reveals that it’s a fairly brief history, with the first stage including all of human history prior to 1958.

Modern project management is considered to start in 1958, characterized by the development of CPM and PERT methods.

1960

In 1960 he was awarded the Deming Application prize.

1965

In 1965, Europe’s overarching project management body, the International Project Management Association (IPMA), was founded.

1969

Shortly afterward, in 1969, the Project Management Institute was founded in North America.

1969: MIL-Q 9858 is revised into the NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) AQAP (Allied Quality Assurance Publications) series of standards for quality assurance systems.

1971

ARPANET: First coming online in 1971, this network linking various learning and research institutions would form the basis of the modern Internet.

1979

Philip Crosby found fame on publication of his book Quality is Free, in 1979.

In 1979, the UK Government's Central Computing and Telecommunications Agency (CCTA) adopted the method for all information systems projects.

1980

By the 1980’s, the Western culture would take notice of Japan’s success and start to set and adhere to higher Total Quality Management guidelines.

1981

In 1981, the Project Management Institute released the Ethics, Standards, and Accreditation project report.

1985

As unwelcome as this message may have been, by 1985 the changes that Deming had introduced contributed to Ford becoming the most profitable US auto company.

1986

In their paper, 'The New New Product Development Game' (Harvard Business Review, 1986) Takeuchi and Nonaka named Scrum as a project management style.

Rapid Application Development was developed by 1991 and development of Crystal Methods began the same year. For example, Scrum was introduced in 1986.

1987

The ISO 9000 series of quality-management standards, for example, were published in 1987.

Risk Management: In 1987, a new version of the PMBOK first introduced the idea of managing risk as a business process and knowledge area.

In 1987, the first official version of ISO 9000 was published, leading to slow but steady adoption by American companies.

1988

In 1988 a major step forward in quality management was made with the development of the Malcolm Baldrige Award in the United States.

1989

In 1989, EVM leadership was elevated to the Undersecretary of Defense for Acquisition, thus making EVM an essential part of programme management and procurement.

1991

Rapid Application Development was developed by 1991 and development of Crystal Methods began the same year.

1992

In response to this, a similar model was developed by the European Foundation of Quality Management in 1992.

1994

1994: ISO releases the first revision of the ISO 9001 standards.

1995

Beginning in 1995, the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award added a business results criterion to its measures of applicant success.

Later they elaborated on it in, 'The Knowledge Creating Company' (Oxford University Press, 1995). Although Scrum is intended for management of software development projects, it can be used to run software maintenance teams, or as a general project and programme management approach.

1996

However, the PRINCE method developed a reputation for being too unwieldy, too rigid and applicable only to large projects, leading to a revision in 1996.

1998

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) recognises PMBOK as a standard in 1998, and later that year by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

1999

The project was delivered in budget, in scope and on time (Moore 1999) and it still remains one of the highest gravity dams in the United States generating more than four billion KW over a year.

2000

In 2000, the ISO 9000 series of quality management standards was revised to increase emphasis on customer satisfaction.

Y2K: As the year 2000 approached, it was realized fundamental software architecture wouldn’t be able to process dates starting with a two.

2000: ISO releases a second revision and merges ISO 9002/3 into 9001.

2001

In February 2001, 17 software developers met at The Lodge, Snowbird, Utah resort to discuss lightweight software development methods.

2002

The Centre for Organisational Excellence Research (COER), recognised the need for resources devoted to this area and launched the BPIR.com in April 2002.

2003

According to (Kwak, 2003), project management has been used for thousand years since the Greek and Egyptian times.

2006

AACE continued its pioneering work in 2006, releasing the first integrated process for portfolio, programme and project management with their Total Cost Management Framework.

2007

So how Project management was evolved? As it is shown in Figure 1 below there was a great influence from Puritans (Whitty & Schulz, 2007). Puritans by default believed that the world operates in a form of chaos and that there is a need for borderline restructuring.

2008

2008: The third revision of ISO 9001 is released.

2012

In September 2012, the International Organisation for Standardisation published "ISO 21500:2012, Guidance on Project Management". It is the result of five year's work by experts from more than 50 countries.

2013

Project Management Institute (2013), A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge — Fifth Edition, Project Management Institute Inc.

2015

2015: ISO 9001:2015 is released and becomes a guideline for organization-level quality management systems, and closer to a TQM model.

2017
