Using research and analytical skills, the Acquisitions Research Associate will support the Acquisitions/Applications team in researching real estate opportunities and providing support for applications to federal, state, and local governments for affordable and workforce housing. They will act as a key support person in identifying, researching and presenting potential development sites to the executive acquisitions team. Your role will include maintaining and enhancing the quality of our GIS datasets to support ongoing and future projects.
Any prior knowledge of, and experience with the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) program, GIS, or grant writing is beneficial.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Research, analyze and interpret Qualified Allocation Plans and federal, state, and local government affordable housing program rules and regulations
Search for development opportunities, such as Request for Qualifications and Request for Proposals, conduct preliminary screening, analyze opportunities, and assist in the preparation of the submission
Identifying land acquisition opportunities that align with strategic goals
Conducting zoning and planning research
Assist with preparation and submitting funding applications to federal, state, and local government finance agencies
Assist in research and data collection and updating databases for mapping projects using GIS, Google Earth, Google Maps
Assist the team with acquisition and underwriting due diligence
Attend meetings and workshops as necessary
Maintain pertinent paper and electronic files and records by naming conventions, ensuring complete, accurate, and organized files

Requirements:
Bachelor's degree

INTERNSHIP - Sea Turtle Research

During the course of this internship, the participant will gain experience and hands-on training in the field of sea turtle research. This position is challenging and requires participants be enthusiastic, self-motivated, hard-working and dedicated to animal welfare. In return, the Intern will receive in-depth hands-on training in all aspects of sea turtle nesting and conservation. Interns will learn how to use ATV's and operate boats as well as the intricacies of working at night on a barrier island. Furthermore, interns will not only gain confidence working with endangered and threatened sea turtle species, but also develop confidence and capability as a scientist working in the field of wildlife conservation.
Essential Duties
* Will monitor beaches on Keewaydin Island and the City of Naples between Doctor's Pass and Gordon Pass for sea turtle nesting activity.
* Cage nests and tag nesting turtles on the southern four miles of Keewaydin Island.
* Patrol on an ATV to look for nesting sea turtles (nights and/or days).
* Cage nests to prevent depredation by raccoons.
* Tag nesting females and accurately record data on carapace dimensions and nest locations.
* Monitor nest-hatching success by excavating nests and counting hatched and un-hatched eggs.
* Safely operate ATV and a motorboat; maintain the ATVs, a generator, and a motorboat by changing the oil on a regularly scheduled basis, fix flat tires, make sure gasoline is on the island to fuel the generator and ATVs, and prepare the equipment for the next evening after each night's field work is completed.
* Keep the field station clean during the course of the summer.
* Enter research information in computer system's database.
* Relate to the public in a cheerful, positive manner when asked questions about sea turtles while patrolling the beaches.
Education and/or experience: Applicant must be at least a college senior in one of the biological or environmental sciences, with BS or BA preferred.

Responsible for carcass disposal, and cleaning of equipment and instruments. Recover marine mammal carcasses for necropsy from the Northwest region (coastal and inland waterways of Manatee County to Escambia County) of Florida. Leads or assists in manatee rescue and transport operations in the Northwest region including open water captures using a manatee capture boat. Assists the MMPL supervisor with the coordination of manatee rescue and capture operations away from designated area as needed and leads rescues in those areas as needed. Manages cetacean stranding data for MMPL responses. Manages NOAA stranding database and completes routine uploads to NOAA-NMFS data diplomat. Completes and updates level A cetacean information. Responsible for cetacean data requests. Manages samples collected from stranded cetaceans. Assists with manatee necropsy report editing. Supervises assigned staff. Duties include but are not limited to: recruitment, training, planning and directing work, reviewing performance with employee, and ensuring compliance with Commission and FWRI rules, policies, and procedures Serves in regional on-call status between 8am and 5pm on holidays in rotation with other MMPL staff members and on occasional weekend days as needed for the purpose of responding to manatee emergencies. Project Overview:
We are seeking two highly motivated individuals to join our team as a Project Manager and Postdoctoral Researcher, contributing to both the scientific and operational success of a major research initiative focused on hydrology and water quality in Florida's coastal watersheds. Your responsibilities include managing daily research operations, coordinating research activities, developing watershed water quality models, identifying water quality "hotspots", and developing effective mitigation strategies. You will ensure that all work is conducted efficiently, ethically, and in compliance with institutional policies, research protocols, and regulatory guidelines. You will also coordinate with fellow researchers, oversee participant involvement, manage data workflows, and maintain project timelines and budgets. Throughout the project, you will apply hydro-informatics, GIS mapping, and water quality modeling techniques to address complex environmental challenges. You will work closely with Dr. Seneshaw Tsegaye, Chair of the Department of Bioengineering, Civil Engineering, and Environmental Engineering, along with other FGCU researchers. Dr. Tsegaye, who also holds the Backe Chair for Sustainable Water Research at the U.A. Whitaker College of Engineering, brings 15 years of expertise in integrated urban water management, hydrology and water quality modeling, GIS for sustainable development, water-sensitive urban design, and flood resilience. Your contributions will be vital in coordinating with research team members, conducting scientific research, reporting project process, publishing in peer-reviewed journals, and supervising graduate researchers.
Essential Job Duties:
* Attend introductory training sessions organized by the project PI and Co-PI's.
* Integrate complex large datasets from open sources and SAS Viya, including spatial and temporal environmental, hydrology, water quality, and climate-related data.
* Lead data processing, ensuring data quality and consistency.
* Conduct water quality modeling for multiple Florida watersheds using Watershed Assessment Model (WAM), Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), Hydrological Simulation Program FORTRAN (HSPF), and/or Water Quality Analysis Simulation Program (WASP).
* Calibrate and validate models using measured surface and groundwater hydrologic and water quality data.
* Conduct scenario analysis to evaluate the impact of climate change and urbanization.
* Develop alternative modeling scenarios for evaluating the benefits of future water quality improvement stategies.
* Generate complex scenarios for evaluating the benefits of land use practices, BMPs, wetland and chemical stormwater treatment projects, etc.
* Document the results of GIS mapping, water quality modeling, hotspot identification, and scenario analysis.
* Manage the project by tracking progress, addressing delays, and coordinating team activities to ensure alignment with research goals and timelines.
* Organize meetings, prepare agendas, and maintain documentation of discussions and decisions.
* Facilitate communication among stakeholders and coordinate project tasks.
* Disseminate research findings through reports, peer-reviewed publications, and presentations at scientific conferences or workshops.
