Job Description
The Center for Global Security Research (CGSR) was established at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) in 1996 to bring together experts from the science, technology, and policy communities to address pressing national security challenges. For over 20 years, CGSR has engaged diverse perspectives on topics important to national security, deterrence, diplomacy, dual-use technology, arms control, nonproliferation, space, cyber, biosecurity, and energy security.
We have openings in Summer 2026 for undergraduate students to engage in practical research on global security topics. Students will work with CGSR over the duration of three to four months as a researchassociate (RA). RAs will engage in practical research to further their educational and career goals, while also supporting the development of strategies for national security and LLNL's mission focus areas. Examples of relevant fields of research include nuclear deterrence, arms control, nonproliferation, emerging technologies, cybersecurity, space, biological & chemical security, and energy security.
CGSR's objectives are as follows:
To explore the dynamics of potential 21st century strategic conflicts (i.e., those with a potential nuclear aspect) and to formulate ideas about how to achieve U.S. deterrence and other objectives in such conflicts.

Conduct an independent research project on an agreed upon topic aligned with CGSR/LLNL research priorities under the supervision of CGSR staff.

Direct, demonstrable experience with advanced molecular technologies, particularly Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) workflows
Exceptional proficiency in molecular biology techniques, including nucleic acid extraction, PCR/qPCR, and NGS library preparation
A proven track-record of using and optimizing and troubleshooting molecular biology protocols.
Experience working with challenging clinical sample types (e.g., FFPE tissue, primary tumor cells, low-input samples).
Experience working within a quality system or environment governed by CLIA, CAP, or ISO 13485 standards strongly preferred.

Essential Functions
Maintain the research laboratories to include but not limited to: Conduct research experiments, analyze research data, and provide reports, as needed. Maintain cell lines and frozen cells in accordance to good laboratory practices. Ensure proper functioning of lab equipment, request repairs as needed. Minimum Qualifications

The Role: The Microbiology Technician Cleaning R&D position is in alignment with the Cleaning Business strategy to lead with #1 brands in the cleaning, sanitization, and disinfection categories. This role supports critical internal R&D formulation development required to establish robust products and method development for various initiatives across all of s businesses. This role is responsible for the prep, execution, and data analysis of laboratory testing in conjunction with the guidance of Scientists and oversight of the Group Manager. The Microbiology Technician is also responsible for implementing tools, resources and practices which serve to increase microbiological capacity while working safely alongside other team members.
The Microbiology Technician Cleaning R&D applies technical microbiological knowledge (with a primary focus on surface sanitization and disinfection) to new and existing test methods, while supporting projects and programs across the businesses by working collaboratively with Scientists and other Technicians on the Microbiology Team.
