San Diego Opera company history timeline

1962

The 2,967 seat Civic Theatre was proposed early in 1962 as a part of a project to catalyze Downtown development to include a new City Hall, a convention center (now the San Diego Concourse), and a parking garage.

1965

You can see who sang what and when in San Diego from our earliest performances in May 1965 to the present.

1976

Beginning in 1976, General Director Tito Capobianco brought the Company international renown with an annual Verdi Festival and expanded the season to six productions, featuring renowned superstars such as Joan Sutherland, Luciano Pavarotti and Beverly Sills.

2016

In November of 2016 the Company launched the dētour Series, which explores lesser known operas and works that fall outside of the Company’s ongoing tradition of presenting grand operas at the San Diego Civic Theatre.
