San Marcos Animal Shelter company history timeline

1846

The town stayed vacant until 1846, when the first Anglos settled near San Marcos Springs.

1851

Modern San Marcos, Texas was founded in 1851 and has flourished for more than 161 years.

1852

Another resource would be the Rancho Guajome in Oceanside, built by Cave Couts in 1852.

1936

The San Marcos Fire Department was formed in 1936 as a volunteer organization.

1946

The department hired its first full time firefighter in 1946.

1956

For the first half of the 20th century, San Marcos stayed a sleepy little SoCal farming town, making its money through dairy products, poultry, honey and other delectable products. It wasn’t until 1956 when water from the Colorado River made its way to San Marcos, that the town started to grow.

1970

Also in 1970, the department’s first new, permanent fire station was built at the intersection of Richmar Avenue and Firebird Lane.

In 1970, the department hired two additional full time firefighters that continued to be supported by a large team of paid-call firefighters from the community.

1980

In 1980, the department built its second station on South Rancho Santa Fe Road in the area of Lake San Marcos.

2000

With the coming of 2000, the City and District were experiencing unprecedented growth.

2001

In 2001, the community celebrated our Sesquicentennial-our 150th Birthday-with an entire year of special events, commemorations and special publications.

2008

In 2008, the department built its fourth station in the San Elijo Hills area to accommodate this growth.

2013

The town is consistently recognized as one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States, and in 2013, it landed on Business Insider’s list of the most exciting small cities in America.
