Santa Barbara was the only incorporated city in this county in 1850.
Founded in 1850 it stands with the oldest law enforcement agencies in the state.
In 1860, the community took it upon itself to raise money and build its own jail.
The Sheriff oversaw law enforcement for the city as well as Santa Barbara County (and the northern portion of Ventura County until 1872.)
During 1970, the effects of the MMBA was being felt throughout the state as other employee associations attempted to meet and confer with their employers, and found ignorance of the new law.
Amidst the smoke and tear gas of the violent Isla Vista riots in 1970, deputies attempted to negotiate for pay raises and time and a half for overtime.
In 2016, the Sheriff’s Office deputies handled more than 119,000 calls for service which resulted in more than 19,000 reports written.
Construction is underway on the new, highly anticipated, state-of-the-art Northern Branch Jail that is scheduled to open in Spring of 2019.
