Founded by Thomas Jefferson, it was chartered in 1819.
The school opened in 1825 with a faculty of eight.
In 1904 Edwin A. Alderman was elected the first president; previously the chief administrative officer had been the chairman of the faculty.
Under Alderman (1904–31), the university established its basic modern structure.

A graduate of Yale University and the University of Virginia School of Law, Sheldon served as Rhode Island’s Director of Business Regulation under Governor Sundlun before being recommended by Senator Pell and nominated by President Bill Clinton to be Rhode Island’s United States Attorney in 1994.
After taking office in 2007, he became known as a liberal Democrat, though he did not always vote with the party.
