We are seeking a Director of Engineering to lead the design, construction, and startup of a high-precision, factory-of-the-future capable of delivering automotive-scale manufacturing throughput with aerospace-grade quality and nuclear safety standards.

Your Day to Day as the Director of Engineering:
Engineering Leadership & Strategy
Establish and lead the overall engineering vision, strategy, and execution for a greenfield uranium enrichment manufacturing operation.
Build, lead, and scale a multidisciplinary engineering organization encompassing manufacturing engineering, facilities, process engineering, quality, automation, and industrialization.
Factory Design, Construction & Startup
Lead end-to-end design and construction of a high-precision manufacturing facility, from conceptual layout through commissioning and full production ramp.
Integrate advanced automation, digital manufacturing, and Industry 4.0 technologies to enable high throughput with exceptional quality.
Manufacturing Excellence
Deliver manufacturing systems capable of automotive-industry production pace while meeting or exceeding aerospace-level quality, reliability, and traceability standards.
Drive Design for Manufacturability (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), and Design for Quality (DFQ) and Design for Cost (DFC) across product and process development.
Quality, Safety & Compliance
Ensure engineering designs and manufacturing processes meet nuclear regulatory requirements, safety standards, and BWXT quality systems.
Partner closely with Quality, Manufacturing, EHS, Regulatory, and Operations to ensure safe, compliant, and repeatable production.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Work closely with executive leadership, operations, supply chain, R&D, and external partners to align engineering execution with business objectives.
Serve as a technical authority and executive advisor on manufacturability, scalability, and risk.
Startup Execution & Scaling
Operate with urgency and accountability in a startup environment while leveraging BWXT's established systems and governance.
Lead rapid production ramp-up from prototype and pilot phases to sustained high-volume manufacturing.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Engineering required; advanced degree preferred.
Minimum 15 years of progressive engineering leadership experience, with significant responsibility for manufacturing, facilities, and industrialization.
Proven experience designing, building, and starting up a high-precision manufacturing facility, preferably in aerospace, nuclear, defense, automotive, or semiconductor industries.
Demonstrated success delivering high-volume manufacturing at automotive pace with aerospace-level quality standards.
Strong background in advanced manufacturing, automation, precision machining, assembly, and inspection systems.
Experience operating in highly regulated environments with rigorous safety, quality, and compliance requirements.
Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance (active clearance strongly preferred).
Ability to report to an assigned work location. This is not a remote opportunity.

Automotive manufacturing and assembly experience, at full scale.

Pay: $161,000 - $233,000
The base salary range for this position in Tennessee (US-TN) at the start of employment is expected to be between $161,000 and $233,000 per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors, and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided at such time the selected job candidate receives an offer of employment. If hired, the selected job candidate will be employed 'at-will,' unless employed at a location and in a position subject to a collective bargaining agreement. Your role in the mission:
Type One Energy is seeking an Mechanical EngineeringManager to oversee, coordinate, and optimize the deployment of engineering resources across multiple technically complex programs. This role is critical to ensuring that engineering talent is effectively aligned with project priorities, schedules, and technical requirements while maintaining the highest standards of engineering quality.
The role operates within a matrixed engineering organization, working closely with Engineering Directors, Technical Leads, Project Managers, HR, and cross-functional stakeholders. The role combines people leadership, resource and capacity planning, and hands-on technical oversight.
In addition to resource management responsibilities, the Engineering Resource Manager will act as a Senior Design Engineer, contributing to technical work as appropriate, participating in design reviews, and ensuring the quality and integrity of engineering models, analyses, and drawings.
Engineering Resource Planning & Allocation
Assign engineers to projects based on technical skill sets, experience level, and project priorities.
Balance workloads across teams to ensure efficient utilization while avoiding burnout or skill misalignment.
Continuously monitor resource capacity and utilization across ongoing and planned projects.
Forecast future engineering resource requirements based on the project pipeline, program schedules, and business objectives.
Work closely with the Senior Director of Engineering to resolve resource conflicts and competing priorities across programs.
People Leadership & Performance Management
Provide direct people leadership to assigned engineers, scientists, and technical staff.
Support employee needs and serve as a point of escalation, representing team concerns and issues to HR and leadership.
Facilitate performance management processes, including goal setting, feedback, performance reviews, and development planning.
Ensure engineers are delivering effectively on assigned tasks and proactively address performance or engagement issues.
Capability Development & Workforce Growth
Maintain a deep understanding of the technical skills, strengths, and development areas of the engineering team.
Identify missing, underrepresented, or critical skill sets required to meet current and future program needs.
Partner with HR and Engineering leadership to support recruiting and onboarding of new engineers.
Work with individual engineers to identify training and professional development needs and support their growth.
Establish and maintain teams of excellence (e.g., simulation, CAD, drawing, analysis teams) to strengthen core engineering capabilities.
Engineering Quality & Technical Oversight
Actively mentor junior and mid-career engineers to grow technical depth, rigor, and engineering judgment.
Ensure that sound engineering practices, standards, and documentation requirements are consistently followed.
Participate in technical and design reviews to ensure quality, completeness, and integration of engineering work.
Review and provide oversight on engineering models, analyses, and drawings to maintain technical excellence.
Promote continuous improvement in engineering processes, tools, and workflows.
What you'll need:
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Physics, or a closely related discipline.
10+ years of experience in engineering design within complex technical environments.
Minimum of 5 years of experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams.
Demonstrated experience developing and deploying new or first-of-a-kind technologies.
Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Analytical mindset with the ability to forecast resource needs, manage capacity, and balance competing priorities.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience serving as a resource manager in a matrixed engineering organization.
Familiarity with task scheduling and work management tools such as Jira or Microsoft Teams.
Experience working in the fusion energy sector or other advanced energy, nuclear, or high-reliability industries.
Proficiency with Siemens NX.
Experience working with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems.
Demonstrated ability to operate in fast-paced environments with aggressive schedules and evolving priorities.

Job Description
This position manages the engineering group responsible for performing engineering, analysis, design, and development of instrumentation and controls (I&C) within the plant or within other technologies across all projects and programs. This includes, but is not limited to, directing the work of engineers on the team, supporting the organizational needs of the I&C design, communication system design, radiation monitoring, operator interface design and integration with the cyber monitoring system and plant access control systems.
Job Profile Tasks/Responsibilities:
* Manage the execution of the I&C design, analysis, or evaluation of assigned projects using sound engineering principles and adhering to business standards, practices, procedures, and product / program / project requirements.
* Assigns engineering resources across projects and ensures qualified staff are performing the work. Manage design cycle planning and provide direction to align the efforts of engineering team members, partners, and suppliers to ensure the successful delivery of high- quality engineering work products are on schedule and within budget as defined by the Project leadership.
* Manages I&C engineering staff by ensuring staff are meeting expectations and promoting staff professional development.
* Influences the development of strategy, methodology and technical tools for the area of responsibility, including control of resources and policy formulation.
* Reviews internal business problems and recommends practical improvements to products, processes, tools, and services.
* Uses judgement to make decisions and handle simple to medium level tasks or problems in areas of operations, product management, technology, or I&C engineering.
* Evaluates the quality of information provided by stakeholders and prompts clarification through targeted, relevant questions. Identifies solutions to engineering problems and provides practical recommendations. Collaborate with engineering teams on new reactor system designs.
* Ensure team compliance with design-control procedures, oversee complete and accurate documentation, coordinate internal and external design reviews, and maintain the integrity of product-configuration data.
* Manage relationships with external engineering vendors and contractors, including oversight of deliverables, performance, and contract compliance.
* Support contract development and technical evaluation for outsourced I&C work scopes.
* Develop and execute staffing plans to support current and future project needs, including forecasting, hiring, onboarding, and resource allocation.
* Balance internal and external engineering resources to optimize project execution and technical quality.
* Maintain professional demeanor and behavior at all times in all forms of communication.
* Perform other duties as assigned by manager.
Job Profile Minimum Qualifications:
* Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, electronic engineering, or electrical computer engineering, or related discipline from an accredited university or college.
* Typically, ten plus years of professional experience in engineering after completion of undergraduate study. Graduate degrees typically count as two plus years of experience.
* Experience estimating time and resources needed to execute engineering activities.
* Requires specialized knowledge within the function of I&C design engineering.
* Experience managing external vendors or engineering contractors, including evaluating technical performance and ensuring contractual obligations are met.
* Demonstrated ability to develop staffing plans, manage team capacity, and support recruiting or onboarding of technical personnel.
