Essential Job Functions:
Primary responsibility: Accompany a DHH student on daily round-trip transportation from Coupeville School District to Madrona School DHH program (Edmonds School District) and return.
Transportation-Specific Duties:
Provide continuous ASL interpretation and communication support during transit
Ensure student safety and appropriate behavior management during inter-district transportation
Communicate with transportation staff (drivers, aides) regarding student needs and safety protocols
Assist with loading/unloading procedures and safety checks at both school districts
Monitor and document student behavior and any incidents during transportation
Facilitate communication between the student and transportation personnel
Coordinate arrival/departure times with both Coupeville and Edmonds School District staff
Student Support Duties:
Provide emotional support and reassurance to the student during travel
Interpret safety instructions, route information, and schedule changes
Assist the student with personal belongings and mobility needs during boarding/exiting
Maintain visual contact and communication with the assigned student throughout journey
Support the student in emergency situations or unexpected delays
Administrative Duties:
Maintain accurate records of inter-district transportation services provided
Complete incident reports and daily transportation logs for both school districts
Communicate with parents/guardians regarding transportation-related matters
Coordinate with DHH program staff at Madrona School and Coupeville staff for seamless transitions
Attend transportation safety meetings and inter-district coordination meetings
Follow all transportation department policies and procedures for both districts
Attend MDT and IEP meetings when required.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

Experience: Required fluency in American Sign Language and current school-based experience as an Educational Interpreter (ASL) supporting students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing
Educational Interpreter (ASL) - Qualifications and Responsibilities:
Demonstrate fluency in American Sign Language to interpret and communicate effectively with the student and staff
Interpret sign language for deaf students and voice for the student when needed
Facilitate communication and educational access for deaf and hard of hearing student(s)
Perform non-instructional signing activities; convert voice to sign language and vice versa
Provide specially designed instruction as needed
Execute accurate, timely, impartial, and effective signing, including strong receptive skills to understand rapidly signed communication
Apply principles, practices, and techniques of interpreting for deaf and hard of hearing individuals
Utilize educational interpreting vocabulary and concepts in a school setting
License - Education - Certification Requirements:
Minimum of a High School Diploma or GED
Associate's or Bachelor's Degree preferred
One of the following:
Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) with a minimum score of 4.0 and a passing score on the EIPA written test
National Interpreter Certification (NIC) from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), and a passing score on the EIPA written test

Work Experience: 1 + years of medical interpreting experience or a successful internship program required. Experience working in medical or human services setting preferred.
Certifications are not compulsory, but desirable. At least a high school diploma or equivalent. For Certified Interpreters: CMI, CHI, CCHI, Interpreting diploma from an interpreting school, NBCMI, 40-hour medical interpreting course.
Fluency in spoken and written English and the language of interpreting, with a preference for native-level fluency in the language of interpreting. Professional level medical interpreting and short non-publication translation skills required.
COVID-19 considerations: All Interpreters must provide proof of vaccination, wear masks and carry portable hand sanitiser when on appointments unless the client determines otherwise.
