As a Senior Formulations Scientist, you will create new skin care development in our internal formulation lab, located in downtown Seattle. This key role will help drive our speed-to-market and innovation initiatives through the design, development, and execution of highly effective and quality formulations. You will have a unique opportunity to contribute to new innovation and work on blue sky concepts. **As a Senior Formulations Scientist, a typical day might include a mix of the following:** + **Formulation Development:** Develop and refine cosmetic formulations for skincare (cosmetics and OTC). Ensure formulations meet efficacy, safety, and stability requirements. + **Innovation:** Stay abreast of industry trends, emerging ingredients, and technological advancements. Participate in product ideation and blue-sky development to drive new product development (NPD). + **Research & Development:** Conduct research on new raw materials, formulation techniques, and emerging trends. Evaluate and source new ingredients for potential inclusion in formulations. + **Testing & Validation:** Design and oversee stability, compatibility, and performance testing for new and existing products. Review and interpret testing results to make data-driven decisions. + **Documentation & Compliance:** Enter formulas into the formula control system. Maintain accurate records of formulation processes and test results. Ensure all products comply with regulatory requirements and industry standards. + **Collaboration:** Work closely with cross-functional teams, including Product Development, manufacturing, quality assurance, packaging, etc., to ensure successful product development and launch. + **Troubleshooting:** Address and resolve formulation issues, such as stability, performance, or sensory attributes. Provide solutions to improve product quality and efficiency. + **Vendor Management:** Engage with suppliers and vendors to evaluate and procure raw materials. Stay informed about supplier innovations and potential new ingredients. + **Quality Assurance:** Support quality control efforts by reviewing and approving stability and performance reports. YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSBILITIES The primary responsibilities of the Associate Principal Scientist - Complex in Vitro Expert CVRI are to: * Responsible for identifying and setting up relevant complex in vitro models (3D organoid, organ-on-chip) to support cardiovascular and renal projects from target identification to preclinical candidate acceptance including hands-on experimentation, analysis of data and presentation to cross-functional project teams; * Support evaluation of external innovation landscape in the field of complex in vitro models and connection to external partners (CROs, academic partners); * Contribute to maintenance of human induced pluripotent stem cell cultures and differentiation into cells of interest (kidney organoids, cardiomyocytes); * Establish and provide guidance on QC and analytical protocols to enable a high degree of standardization of assay protocols; * Lead novel target proposals and experimental validation to support growth of our early cardiovascular & renal portfolio including presentation at internal governance; * Support BD&L assessment of external targets and programs to understand the competitive landscape and identify potential opportunities for collaboration or technological innovation; * Engage in close collaboration with scientists and technical staff of the Complex In Vitro Cluster based at the German sites to share knowledge, drive progress and stimulate innovation; * Prepare and update experimental protocols; * Independently perform data analysis and effectively interpret results; * Lead publication of results, prepare reports and presentations at both internal and external forums; * Coach research associates in a matrix organization; * Collaborate effectively with colleagues and interdisciplinary teams both within Bayer and with external collaborators; * Ensure that all tasks are in alignment with respect to HSE guidelines, documentation and good research practices. This role involves planning and performing laboratory assignments: formulating Fabric Enhancement (FE) formulations: LFS (Liquid Fabric Softener) or new generation of FSS (Fabric Softener Sheets), the measurement of their physical properties, validation of formulations stability, and participate in the formulations' performance testing. The individual draws conclusions based on data/observations, proposes, plans and executes the next steps. The Scientist functions as part of an integrated cross functional R&D team. Primary responsibilities include: Actively seeks to understand and utilizes the understanding of chemical structures, their function relationships and interactions in the FE formulation matrices: FSL, FSS Participates in design and conducts experiments to formulate desired NBE (national Brand Equivalent) performance matrices/formulations Reviews data, provides preliminary interpretation and draws conclusions. Proposes and executes the next steps/strategies of development efforts. Reports progress/issues on a timely basis Ensures accuracy of generated data during laboratory testing and reports according to standard operating procedures or customer requirements Obtains data to evaluate the composition and performance of the NB and competitive formulations/products Coordinates necessary tasks and discussions with R&D cross-functional teams to ensure the tasks are executed in a timely manner Works closely with R&D's cross-functional teams: marketing, matrices/formulations testing, processing/engineering, and manufacturing during the development and commercialization of the FE formulations Works closely with business partners: supply chain, finance, purchasing when appropriate As needed, helps providing subject matter expert support regarding the off-specs formulations/batches Helps preparing presentations to the Ownership, management, customers and/or clients Conducts laboratory work and equipment maintenance in accordance with standard operating procedures Maintains laboratory notebook in accordance with standard operating procedures Ensures the laboratory is kept in a clean, orderly, and safe manner and reports any deficiencies Performs IP review for FTP studies The ideal candidate should possess the following: Education - Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry or equivalent Science or Engineering related field •Experience - 2+ years of relevant laboratory and industry experience • Strong communication skills and ability to utilize good judgement to make timely, practical, and technically sound decisions Physical Requirements: Significant amount of time at a bench or a computer station. On rare occasions there is a need to lift up to twenty (20) pounds. Knowledge of and experience with developing product systems for the retail market, preferably hygiene products Knowledge of materials used in retail absorbent products (e.g. pulp, super absorbent polymers, nonwovens). Working knowledge of consumer product converting technologies for pulp, paper and nonwoven materials. Experience with the process of searching, evaluating and filing patents. Experience providing direction for the physical testing of hypotheses, resulting in specific conclusions and recommendations. Able to speak, read and write the English language and have strong oral and written communication skills. Good analytical skills, with working knowledge of basic statistics. Good computer skills in Microsoft Office program. Able to travel ~20-30% to US and International for product and process trials.
