City of Titusville company history timeline

1887

Of special note is the incorporation of Titusville in 1887 and the organization of a Board of Trade which was the forerunner of the present-day Chamber of Commerce.

In 1887 the state legislature formed Osceola County from parts of Brevard and Orange Counties.

1890

In the fail of 1890, the town council voted to adopt the Edison lighting system.

1895

In December, 1895 the major portion of Titusville's central business core was destroyed by fire.

In 1895 Flagler changed the name of the railroad to the Florida East Coast Railway.

1900

By 1900, Brevard had become one of the leading citrus producing counties in Florida.

1916

In 1916 the Titusville Elementary and High School was completed.61

1920

1926

The Florida Boom collapsed in 1926, bringing to a close a significant period of growth for communities throughout the state.

1927

Since no airports existed on the east coast between Jacksonville and Miami a highlight of 1927 was the opening of present-day Arthur Dunn Airpark for use as an emergency landing field for the airmail service of the times.

1949

On August 11, 1949 President Harry S. Truman signed an executive order establishing a testing facility there to be shared by all three branches of the military.

1950

The first launch occurred in 1950 and testing continued increasing throughout the 1950s.

1954

1961

The NASA program became increasingly important after 1961, when President John F. Kennedy announced plans to place a man on the moon before the end of the decade.

1969

In 1969, the residents of the city of Eau Gallie and those of Melbourne City voted in favor of the amalgamation of the two cities.

1974

Windover, discovered in 1982, is one of the best preserved aboriginal burial sites yet discovered.

2018

With an estimated population of around 83,000 residents according to a 2018 population survey, Melbourne is the second-largest and most populated metropolis in the County.
