The Travelers Aid Society was the idea of Brian Mullanphy, mayor of St Louis, who died in 1851, leaving one-third of his million-dollar fortune to aid immigrants going west during the days of the Gold Rush.
Beginning in the 1880’s, in major US cities, spurred in part by organizations like the YWCA, Travelers Aid programs were formed specifically to provide protection for women and girls who traveled alone.
The Travelers Aid Society of New York was founded in 1907 by Grace Hoadley Dodge.
Travelers Aid volunteers were at Union Station in March 1913 to help visitors navigate the city for the first inauguration of Woodrow Wilson.
1913Union StationThe Travelers Aid Society of Washington (D.C.) was founded in 1913 by the YWCA and began assisting travelers at the relatively new Union Station.
The TRAVELERS AID SOCIETY, a free service for people in difficulty away from home, was established in Cleveland in 1920, 3 years after the National Travelers Aid Society.
During the 1920’s and through World War II, Travelers Aid was a prominent fixture at major railroad stations, assisting travelers with information, helping unaccompanied minors as they traveled, and assisting stranded travelers.
In 1925 this function was taken over by the newly established WOMEN'S BUREAU OF THE CLEVELAND POLICE DEPARTMENT. That same year, the society began doing casework.
Because of the strain on its funds, the society was taken over by the Federal Transient Program and the Cuyahoga County Relief Administration in 1933.
In 1939 a Traveler's Aid field office was established at the Greyhound Bus Station.
When the federal government opened the new Washington National Airport in 1941, the USO was an established presence there.
In 1941, it became one of the six groups that President Roosevelt tapped to form the United Service Organizations (USO.)
The Travelers Aid program at Washington Dulles was launched in 1963, with one desk on the Baggage Claim level.
1992Newark International AirportThe Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, seeing a need to improve its customer service at Newark International Airport, instituted a Travelers Aid Program there in 1992.
In 2010, at airports, train and bus stations, Travelers Aid (including more than 2500 volunteers) assisted 7 million travelers!
Travelers Aid began operating at Bradley International Airport in October 2018 with a group of 40 dedicated senior volunteers.
