George Williams, born on a farm in 1821, came to London 20 years later as a sales assistant in a draper’s shop, a forerunner of today’s department store.
The Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) was founded in London, England, on June 6, 1844, in response to unhealthy social conditions arising in the big cities at the end of the Industrial Revolution.
By 1851 there were 24 Ys in Great Britain, with a combined membership of 2,700.
In 1853, the first YMCA for African Americans was founded in Washington, D.C., by Anthony Bowen, a freed slave.
By 1880, most Ys had gyms for their members use.
On January 15, 1892 Naismith published the rules for basketball.
After years of discussion among a broad spectrum of citizens, the YMCA formed a volunteer steering committee in 2005 to determine if a facility should be built in Meridian.
Along with input from these partners, community surveys, focus groups, and volunteer design charrettes led the design of the YMCA. Phase One, (the “dry side”) of the construction project, broke ground on October 27, 2016.
