    General Job Information Located in the nation's capital, The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) is the chief legal office of the District of Columbia. The OAG enforces the laws of the District, defends, and provides legal advice to the District's government agencies and protects the interests of the District's residents. This position is located in the Civil Litigation Division of the Office of the Attorney General. The Civil Litigation Division is seeking a Section Chief for Section IV. The Civil Litigation Division defends the District of Columbia, including District agencies, officers, and employees, in civil lawsuits filed in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia and the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia seeking monetary damages, equitable remedies, and other relief. The Section Chief will work under the supervision of CLD's Deputy Attorney General and two Assistant Deputy Attorneys General. The Section Chief will directly supervise approximately eight (8) line attorneys and three (3) support staff. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The Section Chief will ensure proper case assignment and case transfers to and coverage by AAGs to meet court, mediation, and other schedules or deadlines. They will review and approve pleadings, motions, memoranda, discovery and correspondence. They will be responsible for evaluating cases for settlement purposes and authorizing or recommending settlement amounts. Monitoring compliance of AAGs and staff with the Attorney General's Performance Contract requirements, including response to contacts within 24 hours. Reviewing litigation outcomes and making timely recommendations where appellate review is needed. Additionally, the Section Chief will be responsible for attending management meetings with the Deputy Attorney General and others at the Office of the Attorney General as requested, as well as attend such management and other specific meetings with District agencies, their units, or personnel as necessary or requested. Assist in interviewing, reviewing, evaluating, and, where necessary, disciplining AAGs and staff, in accordance with D.C. Rules of Professional Conduct and OAG standards and policies. Maintain requisite legal, management, inter-agency, human relations, and management-labor knowledge and skills; and collecting, maintaining, and disseminating timely, accurate and up-to-date data on the Section's activities. PAD investigates and litigates affirmative civil cases aimed at protecting the public interest, including cases involving civil rights, consumer protection, housing conditions, elder justice, antitrust laws, workers' rights, and fraud against the District. The Civil Rights & Elder Justice Section (CREJS) is one of five sections within PAD and civilly enforces the District's non-discrimination laws and laws that protect elders and vulnerable adults from financial exploitation. The section prosecutes a wide range of cases, seeking injunctive relief, damages or restitution, and civil penalties, typically in DC Superior Court. CREJS seeks an experienced litigation attorney for the section's elder justice work, with a particular focus on developing pattern and practice cases involving fraud and scams that impact elders and vulnerable adults. The attorney may also work on select civil rights cases, coordinate with attorneys in PAD's other sections, participate in community outreach activities, and assist on policy matters or amicus briefs with OAG leadership and other OAG divisions. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The successful candidate will investigate, develop, and litigate cases against entities that violate District law; help develop a robust enforcement strategy to deter violations and encourage compliance in target industries; and engage in community outreach. Duties of the position will include identifying areas for investigation, conducting pre-suit discovery using compulsory process and informal methods, working with expert witnesses, taking depositions, conducting document review and analysis of complex factual and legal issues, negotiating settlements, drafting internal memoranda, preparing matters for litigation, litigating cases through trial in D.C. These APD positions will represent indigent trial-level clients facing misdemeanor and felony criminal charges in Common Pleas, Municipal, and Juvenile courts within those counties. The division includes six sections: * The Criminal Section prosecutes certain types of adult misdemeanor offenses. * The Juvenile Section prosecutes delinquency offenses committed by youth under the age of 18. * The Fraud and Public Corruption Section prosecutes criminal offenses involving financial fraud and offenses committed by public officials that undermine the public trust. * The Domestic Violence and Special Victims Section prosecutes violations of civil protection orders (CPOs); represents petitioners in obtaining CPOs and extreme risk protection orders that remove guns from dangerous persons; prosecutes sexual offenses, dating violence, and offenses against vulnerable victims when committed by youth under the age of 18; and pursues protective proceedings for vulnerable adults being abused, neglected or exploited. * The Mental Health Section represents the Department of Behavioral Health in civil commitment proceedings where mental health consumers suffer from mental illness and are a danger to self or others. * The Restorative Justice Section supports survivors of crime through the prosecution process and facilitates restorative conferences between offenders and survivors of crime where the offenders seek to take accountability for their actions and survivors wish to have a facilitated conversation with those who have caused them harm.
