University of Saint Francis company history timeline

1890

The University of Saint Francis was founded by the Sisters of St Francis of Perpetual Adoration in Lafayette, Indiana, in 1890.

1920

As their education skills grew, so did their schools, culminating with the establishing of the College of St Francis, now the University of St Francis, in 1920.

1926

The College continued its meteoric growth and built a new facility on Butler Street in 1926.

1944

The campus moved to its current Fort Wayne location in 1944 to the estate of the former industrialist John H. Bass.

1959

The first male students register (as part-time); by 1959, the college is co-ed.

1960

In 1960, St Francis embarked on an expansion program.

The school, originally known as Saint Francis College, has remained in Fort Wayne and gradually expanded, adding a graduate school in 1960.

1969

The College of St Francis welcomed their first lay president in 1969 and after a failed merger with Lewis College in Romeoville, began to welcome male students.

1998

The University of Saint Francis was founded by the Sisters of St Francis of Perpetual Adoration in Lafayette, Indiana, in 1890. It was renamed University of Saint Francis in 1998.

2018

Home, Sweet Home! The college relocates to Fort Wayne after the Sisters purchase part of the Bass estate and 65 acres for $65,000 ($918,000 in 2018 terms).
