Welcome House company history timeline

1972

In 1972, West Haven Foundation for the Retarded – the precursor to Welcome house — was established by a group of parents of individuals with developmental disabilities.

In 1972 the Steudel family had a vision — to build a group home for their son Bill and his friends.

1981

The first group home opened in 1981 and housed eight men who lived in that home for the remainder of their lives.

1982

Welcome House was founded in 1982 by Father William Mertes, then director of Catholic Social Services, and an ecumenical coalition of churches.

In 1982, Welcome House opened its doors as an Emergency Assistance Center.

1983

After renovating the building at 141 Pike Street to accommodate living areas, the Welcome House Shelter opened in 1983.

1986

In 1986, the current property at 1414 E. 27th Street was purchased from Catholic Charities.

1994

In 1994 Welcome House, Inc. was created to provide services to individuals with developmental disabilities while West Haven focused its mission on raising funds to ensure the longevity of the organization.
