1904

2, 1904, the fire company was officially established, with Robert Pyle serving as the first president of the fire company.

1905

In March of 1905, a four-wheel, horse-drawn chemical engine truck rolled into town.

1906

Then, in 1906, a new building was built at the corner of Prospect and Walnut.

1919

The first motorized apparatus was purchased in 1919, and, for the first time, the apparatus carried water to the fire.

1927

The Cocoanut Grove was a restaurant/supper club (nightclubs did not officially exist in Boston), built in 1927 and located at 17 Piedmont Street, near Park Square, in downtown Boston, Massachusetts.

1928

5, 1928, there was a simple report of the firefighters responding to a blaze at the West Grove Millwork company that took place on Oct.

1928 was also the year of the largest fire in West Grove history.

The fire company bought the original building on Prospect Street in 1928.

Also in 1928, the fire company experienced its only line of duty death – at a mill fire in Toughkenamon.

1940

Hardly a person in Boston or New England during the 1940’s could be found who did not have a friend or relative who wasn’t at the Grove that night, or had planned to go, or had left before the fire started, or wasn’t affected by this tragedy.

1942

The first recorded general (non-test patients) use of penicillin to fight infection on burn victims occurred at MGH on December 2, 1942.

1947

He died in 1947, at age 50, several months after his release from prison.

o In 1947 the WGFC bought the first tanker truck in Chester County.

1961

o The Ambulance division was formed in 1961 – the first ambulance responded from the West Grove Hospital.

1975

o Our first ladder truck was added to our fleet in 1975.

2004

Steele said that he was asked to write the history of fire stations 22, 12, and 32 for the fire company’s centennial in 2004.
