The first navigational light leading into San Pedro Bay, Point Fermin Lighthouse was built in 1874.
In 1948 he bid on a load of welding rods being sold off as war surplus in Hawaii, sold his car dealership to pay for them and drove out to Los Angeles to take delivery, hoping to save money by shortening the distance.
Completed in 1954, the Watts Towers Arts Center is a 99-foot-tall group of steel towers created over 30 years in the free time of a local construction worker.
At his death, he owned five dealerships, including the flagship Ford dealership in Long Beach, which he bought in 1974.
But while his silly commercials may have made him famous, and entertained millions over several generations, Worthington told The New York Times in 2008 that it was as much his business acumen as anything that made him a success.
