Department Overview Founded in 1977, the Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) is a global leader in biomedical engineering education and scholarship headquartered in the School of Science and Engineering (SSE) on Tulane's picturesque uptown campus. Its mission is to inspire and work with students to develop and apply engineering methods to address health science challenges. The BME undergraduate program has been ABET accredited since 1981, and we currently have approximately 150 undergraduate BSE majors and 50 graduate students in MS and PhD programs. BME originated from joint research efforts among faculty in the SSE and the Schools of Medicine (SOM) at Tulane and the Louisiana State University Medical Center in New Orleans. Over the past 45+ years, BME research has expanded from a mechanics-oriented focus to a broader range of investigations, including biomechanics, biotransport, biomaterials, tissue engineering, medical imaging, and biomedical instrumentation, and expends approximately $2.3 million in research funding annually. The department is home to 13 core faculty with specific focus on investigations of pulmonary mechanics, blood physiology and biomechanics, microphysiological systems, cell therapies, medical imaging, and data science. The department is strongly committed to clinically translational research. For example, one of our faculty was recently recognized as one of the first awardees of the Biden Cancer Moonshot project, with up to $22.9 million in funding from the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) to support perioperative cancer detection. Over half of our tenure-track faculty are engaged in entrepreneurship and technology licensing. The newly opened Steven and Jann Paul Hall provides advanced laboratory and instructional space. The BME department also leads Tulane's Institute of Integrated Engineering for Health and Medicine (TI2EHM) on the downtown Health Sciences Campus. We provide exceptional training and mentorship to our graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, who pursue careers in the pharmaceutical sciences. Our graduates are well-equipped to contribute to the development of new drugs and therapies through basic and applied research. About the Institution Founded in 1925 by Saint Katharine Drexel and the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, Xavier University of Louisiana is the only Catholic Historically Black College and University (HBCU). The LCRC has recently reorganized into the structure of an NCI center and is aggressively building cancer research and outreach programs. Living in the Area Xavier is located near the heart of New Orleans in a quiet neighborhood dotted with bungalows. An enclosed campus green mutes the urban feel of the encroaching city, and yellow brick buildings have been erected among the older historical limestone structures. Xavier was hard-hit in 2005 by Hurricane Katrina (much of the campus was underwater), but $130 million in renovations as well as the construction of the state-of-the-art Pharmacy Pavilion, Convocation Center, and St. Katharine Drexel Chapel, leave no traces of that tragic event. With a population of 400,000 and a cost of living lower than the national average, New Orleans charms visitors and locals alike with its music scene, diverse cuisine, and refusal to abandon its cultural traditions. The Department of Ophthalmology at the LSU Health Sciences Center, School of Medicine in New Orleans is seeking applicants for a faculty position as a Retina subspecialist at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor (non-tenure, clinical track). The successful candidate will be expected to integrate clinical duties with departmental educational programs for medical students, residents and fellows. Engagement in and support of departmental clinical research is preferred. Practice locations are situated in New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Houma.
