Can a Catholic become a mason?
Yes, a Catholic can become a mason; however, there have been tensions between the Catholic church and Freemasons for centuries now.
The reasons for the friction between the institutions are complex and varied and date back to 1738 when Pope Clement XII issued a papal call, Eminenti Apostolatus. This papal explicitly forbade any Catholic from joining a freemason lodge. This decree was upheld by Popes and the Catholic church for over 200 years.
Then in 1983, the Vatican issued a new Code of Canon Law, one of the issues dealt with in this law was the removal of the specific prohibition of Catholics becoming freemasons.
Though the document still expressed concerns about Freemasonry in general and asked Catholics to obtain from joining organizations that hold judgments against ecclesiastical authority, any organizations that represent an undermining of the church, or hostility towards the Catholic church.
In summation, the law prohibiting Catholics from becoming Masons was removed, though it might still be frowned upon in some circles of Catholicism for a Catholic to become a Freemason. However, in present times the answer to this question resides more in the personal preference of the specific Catholic and the Mason lodge they want to join.
